How much of it? The Texas Chainsaw Massacre went along with the same tagline and thats far from a true story.

      Re: Hostel

I think that it's based on the fact that there are some actual secretive abandoned places in parts of Europe where people of several nationalities are kidnapped, and people pay to torture their 'patients' to death.

Don't know for sure, but I'm guessing it's not based on the fact that there are multiple hostels have women that are offering nightly orgy for as long as you're there.

Well, I'm sure that's the case in some places also... but I'm guessing that's not what their intention was when they said "Based on true events".

            Re: Hostel

I saw this two days ago and it was alright. I say it's the typical 1 and a 1/2 star horror movie.

To put that in perspective, Friday the 13th II was a 1 and a 1/2 star movie.

I didn't find the movie scary or even that gory. In fact, Tarantino did a good job of not really showing the actual action of torture. He only implied it - which I think is the best kind of horror movie. Unfortunately, for Tarantino, Eli Roth didn't give him a good script to work with.

I guess what I can say is that the movie was shot very well. Angles were great and it feasted on feeding your brain with images that were never there to begin with (ie: clamp closing down on the toes and cutting them off. You never saw it actually happen, but you can't think of that scene without imagining it happening in your mind).

The pacing and writing? Not so good. Typical horror flick.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

yeah, it was meh for me too..

however, during channel surfing, I saw some show about most scary movie moments on Bravo. This movie was number one..for some reason.

kinda shows the quality of their programming. nothing but a VH1 knockoff now, with their shows full of random clips and valuable celebrity insight.

I'm going to have to agree, especially in the way that they made the first half of the movie. I agree with YankeePride in a few ways at the same time, though.

HOWEVER, when I saw Saw III, there was a very interesting teaser for Hostel: Part II. Actually, it was honestly one of my favorite teasers in a long time.

I'll see if it's somewhere online.
