You ARE kidding, arent you? Take a look at what they're paying on Ebay for the Xbox 360.

This is a crazy idea, but what if they started out the PS3 at about $1500? Then, some REALLY hardcore people pre-order it and they buy it when it first comes out. One week later... BAM! $500.

They aren't gonna sell thousands of units on EBay for going on 800-1000 bucks. Only reason they are sellin that much now is, because of a shortage. Having a shortage is one thing. Having a ton of consoles sittting around, because nobody will pay that price is another. So no I wasn't kidding.

Will any of these discs be anywhere NEAR filled to capacity? It's all a waste to me, it seems.

not bad.. most folks with a HDTV can afford this, so its not a big deal. its all about choices though. do you want HDDVD or blue ray. or wait a year for the next biggest thing?

Most HDTV owners can probably afford a HD-DVD Player, if infact they are $499-799, but I doubt most would be able to spend $1800 on a blu-ray player.

I hope HD DVD wins out. There prices are much better than blue ray. $1800 is just crazy.

there are always enough people to be the "early adopters" in this cycle...look at people who had laserdisc, very small subset of people, but it had a following. It's whether either of these can make it past that group of tech savvy people who buy all the new toys, and into the general public's mind, that's the big deal. It's easy to release something that .1% of the population buys, because it's nifty and novel, but to release something that permeates its way into society, that's a tougher one. Sometimes the better, more technologically advanced, thing doesn't survive, see Beta as has been mentioned.

I, for one, will be watching the HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray battle to see what happens. Also keep in mind that HDtv's aren't totally commonplace yet. I don't have one, my girlfriend doesn't, my parents don't, most of my friends don't. They're still fairly expensive, and a lot of people don't want to spend that kind of money on a tv yet. If you don't have a HDtv, then what good is either new format of DVD? I know a bunch of people here have HDtv's, but people here are in that subset of buyers who hop on bandwagons early, we're not indicative of what the general public will do.

It's not a waste at all. HD material takes a ton more space than SD does. 2 hours of HD content will fill up pretty much an entire single layer (25gb) Blu-ray disc. Also consider what all that extra space will allow for in terms of archiving and for things like season sets of tv shows. We will definitely be seeing tv show season sets on the new discs, and ones that are broadcast in HD will still take 3-6 discs per season, but for SD shows that come out (or re-released sets on the new formats), they will potentially be able to put a whole season on 1 or 2 discs, something both consumers (convenience) and retailers (space conservation) will appreciate.

I don't get why a lot of you are going on and on about the cost of the early players, either. Every single piece of consumer electronics equipment that I can ever remember was introduced at an expensive price, only to come down as market penetration increased. There are people here who are old enough to remember how much things like VCR's and CD players cost when they first came out. Even DVD players were pretty close to what most HD-DVD and Blu-ray players will retail for. Why should it be any different this time around?

Everyone also seems to be forgetting (or just not aware) that Samsung will be first to market with a Blu-ray machine, and it will be $1,000, not $1800. The Pioneer Elite and Sony ES models are the $1,800 ones, and some of that is due to them being their respective manufacturer's "high end" lines. If you take Toshiba's 500 dollar entry level HD-DVD player out of the equation, then the prices for both formats are about the same. It won't be long before Blu-ray also has a cheaper player, either.
