    Sure there is.

He's the only survivor of a dead planet. He is completely alone. No mater how many lives he saves, no matter how many supervillians he fights, no matter how many people love him .... he's still alone.

You're Superman. You can do anything, and save anyone. ... But you can't do everything and save everyone. At all times of the day and night, you could be saving lives and still not save everyone.

      exactly.

It's something that hasn't been touched in the movies too much, but Smallville does a pretty good job of showing the emotional turmoil that Superman lives. He is expected to save everyone and there are choices he has to make when it isn't possible to do so. Also the fear that people won't except him because he is an alien. In Smallville they don't know he is one, but in the comics people do. There are even times when some of his super buddies hold a prejudice against him because he is an alien.

Superman is forced to live a double life because of what he is. He would love a normal life with his friends and family, but he realizes he is on Earth for a much different reason. He has to protect his family and friends, and part of that is masking who he is.

You also can't forget the restraint he always has to keep in his mind not to totally destroy a villian. It builds frusteration within him. Would it be easier and better for the world if he compromised his values and the law and used his full power against the villians? Who would stop him?

There are many things going on inside Superman's head that could lead to a total meltdown person. But one of the things that makes Superman so great is that he volunteers to bear that burden and put the world first.

Since I don't read a lot of the modern stuff my view comes from the comics that I read which made Supes more omnipotent and God-Like. Can you suggest any TPBs or GNs that touch on either of those two scenarios?

A more recent Superman dealing with his being alone in the universe, is the recent Supergirl storyline from Superman/Batman. Batman is his usual skeptical self when it comes to this new Supergirl, while Superman wants to believe in her more than anything because she is hope that he isn't alone: http://www.dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?gn=4570

Another good recent storyline is Greg Rucka's stories about a new villian Ruin, who is trying to hurt Superman by targeting those he loves. He realizes it is easier to hurt Superman by attacking ones he cares about rather than attacking him head on. Superman has to deal with the fact that these people are being targetted because of his relationship with them and he feels helpless at times with his ability to protect them: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/140...lance&n=283155

Those are just a couple recent ones I can think of.

If Superman can be faster than a speeding bullet, why can't he be fast enough to save everybody.

                  Re: new superman returns pictures

News came out today that DC Comics is going to release 4 Superman Returns comics book specials that bridge the gap between Superman II and Superman Returns. The stories will be written by Brian Singer and the crew, so it should be a great lead in to the new movie. I'm excited about it. Here's the description of each special provided by newsarama:

SUPERMAN'S MOVIE TEAM MOVES TO COMICS

Think of them as Superman: The Missing Years….without Superman.

Stretching his director’s chair to reach across two mediums, Bryan Singer, along with Superman Returns screenwriters Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris will take steps into comics in June with the release of four Superman Returns specials, filling in events not covered by the movie, and, perhaps more importantly, bridge the years-long gap between Superman II and Superman Returns.

Got that? Right – after Superman II, Superman left earth (and apparently retconned Superman III and IV clean out of existence), and in the forthcoming Superman Returns, he…returns, making the new movie a direct sequel to the 1980 film starring Christopher Reeve.

The move of bringing screenwriters in to handle the comic adventures of the same character isn’t altogether new for DC – in 1989, Batman co-writer Sam Hamm wrote the three part “Blind Justice” arc in Detective Comics #598-#600. (Blade screenwriter David Goyer wrote the comic adaptation of the 1998 New Line film version of the Marvel character as well).

The four specials (which are scripted by other writers) are:

                  Superman Returns: Krypton To Earth

Story by Bryan Singer, Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris
Script by Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray
                  Art by John Byrne
                  Cover by Adam Hughes

Produced in conjunction with Superman Returns director Bryan Singer and screenwriters Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris, four astonishing one-shots bridge the gap between Superman II and Superman Returns!

In the first, revisit the Man of Steel’s origins and see the first glimmers of what has transpired since he left the Earth at the end of Superman II!

Nice i'll have to check this out. I'm thinking of hoping back into comics but DC is overcharging on subs big time...12 dollars extra in shipping to Canada which puts the price in the 70s range which means 80 something for me.

Luckily there's a comic shop somewhat near me. I'll do subscription with them.

But yeah, filling in the events of S2 and SR is a good idea and will definitely make for interesting reading.

Cause Batman can be twisted when he needs to be. Superman can't. Take a gander at the Hush graphic novels or the Dark Knight Returns.

well yea i've known about those stories, but its more like batman fanboys want to do the impossible and take out superman. there should be more stories about superman killing batman, but it'd be like a 2 pg comic book
