    Oscar Nominations

    http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Movi...ons/index.html

Nothing too surprising in terms of the films and actors.

I do look foward to hearing "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp" from the movie Hustle and Flow. I wonder if Terrance Howard will come out and perform it. Slim Shady didn't perform Lose Yourself when the song got nominated.

Awesome, finally Paul Giamatti gets a nod. Crash was one of my favorite movies so hopefully they bring in a couple

I'm happy as hell that Terrence got nominated even though he has no chance to win. I was expected Russel Crowe to take that last nomination slot.

Also, Whoop That Trick should have been nominated before "Hard for a Pimp".

I didn't see "Hustle and Flow," but Howard was great in "Crash."

IMO, the Academy Awards are kind of becoming a joke because it's all about which movies generate the most "buzz" and are pimped the most by their studios. That's why Crash got a nomination ahead of Walk the Line - because the studio that distributed it marketed the hell out of it and generated "buzz."

It, like most other award shows, is a popularity contest now. It's not about which movies are the best, but which are the darlings of the critics. And those are two very different things.

              That's nuts.

              First, did you see "Crash?"

Second, "Crash" was released last May, a hell of a long time ago in Oscar terms. It takes a quality picture to stay in Academy voters' minds that long.

Look at all of the other movies nominated for Best Picture: They all were released in September or later. That's by design so they have a better chance of an Oscar nomination.

And "Crash" received nowhere near the credit or buzz of "Walk the Line," which was all over the front covers of newspapers and magazines and had a big advertising blitz upon release.

I'm not saying "Walk the Line" isn't worthy of a nomination. But to suggest "Crash" was nominated strictly because of buzz is way off the mark.

              Take care,

It's called promotion, and it's what any studio would do to push an Oscar-worthy movie that has been out of the theaters and the minds of Academy voters for a few months.

From the story, if you dared read past the first two paragraphs:

                  >>>Lionsgate Releasing President Tom Ortenberg said the DVD campaign was especially important for a film like “Crash,” a May release that is no longer in theaters and might otherwise be overlooked in the flood of newly released Oscar contenders.<<<

There's a reason that the studios that made "Brokeback Mountain" and "Munich" don't need to make a huge push: Both movies are still in the f*cking theaters!

Again, did you even see "Crash?"

You havent seen Crash, have you?

Also, Crash is far from a darling of the critics. I have never seen a movie where people were as split as they are with Crash. Some think its great while a lot of critics thought it was unrealistic and overrated.

PK, Do yourself a favor and rent it. Its a weird film in that if you read the plot you would think its going to be a horrible film. The director and Howard found a way to make it a great film.

Thanks for the tip. I really like Howard as an actor, so I'll have to check it out.

Wow, thanks for all the condescention and insults.

My point wasn't that Crash was a "sh*t movie" as you kindly put into my mouth, but more to illustrate that it got a best picture nomination because its studio marketed the hell out of it. Which, obviously, they did because they didn't think it would have gotten one otherwise. I'm not really sure the point you're trying to make here.

Also, you're kidding yourself if you think Brokeback Mountain hasn't made a huge promotional push as well, despite its "still being in the f*cking theaters" as you so eloquently put it.

You probably think Titanic is a better movie than Good Will Hunting and LA Confidential, huh? Of course it wasn't, but it had buzz and tons of promotional dollars behind it....

Crash was one of the better movies of 2005. Now it is one of my favorites. I love movies that get you thinking. It deserves it's nomination, it isn't even up for discussion.

Sherik i'm wondering why you pick crash to be the one that doesn't deserve it? I agree that Walking the Line should get a nod, but why do you think crash even got a "buzz"? And these marketing dollars you are talking about, most people saw this movie because other people told them to watch right away not because of some commercial.

And yeah titanic was not better than Good Will Hunting, but Crash didn't have to spend millions to make its movie, it was backed by great perfomances from its actors
