    James brown.. In the 80's nearly half of hip hop had a JB sample in their joint..

                  I'd probably say James Brown.

                  An interesting thing to note is Marvin Gaye's ""T" Plays it Cool" off of the TROUBLE MAN album. That song a has very rudimentary rap musical riff going on in it.

                    Or you can go back earlier than that with Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaungh scat singing.
