Re: So when did it become cool to curse.....

I used to have a big problem with cursing. It's not as bad now but sometimes I'll let them slip. The thing with me is I never curse when I'm around ANYONE else. It's just something that is important to me. If I do curse, I always make sure it is where no one else can hear it. I would say it has been years since someone has actually heard me curse. My parents would slap me if they heard me curse and I'm 20 years old. And yes, music can be a big influence on someone's language. If you listen to something over and over, it gets imbedded in your head, and it can become natural to speak that way.

Well you must be different than me because what music I listen to does not influence my speech.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

What music do you listen too? I honestly can't help but notice that your opinion is just as unsupportive as everyone else's on here. Though you might not think music doesn't affect the mind, you'd be quite surprised. You might consider it as not being as strong of an influence in yoru life, but it's more present and effective in shaping the thoughts than you'd know. Honestly, if you want to proclaim that listening to anything really doesn't affect character, check out a few of the sites where experiments are done.

Also, you have to realize the type of music that the generations have gone through. I mean, girls are more sleezy and easy now than they were five years ago and so on. Music, however isn't the only source for degenerating the senses of the mind. It's a whole nother argument on a whole different horizon.......

Anyone who acts a fool because of the music they listen to is weak minded in my opinion. Thats the only way I can explain people who listen to music and still manage to act right. To say that "music is the reason" just doesn't fly.

I hate that show...as I do pretty much every other dating show...I feel bad for the boy/girlfriend that has to sit at home and watch their gf/bf go on dates with other people and be disrespected by their parents through much of it....I know that if I ever got put on that show the relationship would be over right then and there, if my girlfriend wants to go date other guys she can do it being single cuz I'd be done with that relationship.

Music isn't THE reason but it is ONE of the reasons. Honestly, do you think kids would use as much foul language if it wasn't presented in many of the genres of music today? To say music doesn't affect people is crazy.

I didn't start swearing because of music. I heard most of the swears from my dad and family, so yes, I'd say I would still use as much foul language if I didn't listen to the small collection of rap, of hard rock, of meta, that I do.

I agree...I can definitely say that I picked up swearing from my dad and not from the music I listen to.

He probably listened to it as a youth somewhere....so in a sort of twisted way, music still affected your language.......

However, it is only one of the many parts that really affect language and character. ONE OF THE MANY!!

Re: So when did it become cool to curse.....

You would be naive to say that music hasn't contributed to kids and teens cursing more. Do you honestly think kids would curse as much if they weren't exposed to it every single day they turn on a TV or radio? Because of music, some kids think that its suddenly OK to curse, and they think it's not a big deal. Of course, bad parenting is also a big reason why cursing is so popular, but music is as responsible as anything else.

I'm 25 and can only remember cursing 2 times with my parents in the same room. I used to be pretty bad about it, especially watching USC football games on tv. I rarely curse at all now.

There's about 10 zillion other words in the english vocabulary to use instead of profanity.

Does it really matter? We all know most kids growing up today are more disrespectful then previous teens. Some are still respectful but the bottom line is most arn't, so why complain about it? Yes, it can be very disrespectful at times but let people say what they want or don't watch these shows.

I think it started with the whole Hip Hop culture (mainly the mainstream culture) having more curse words then actual regular words in songs. You can also attribute the "coolness" of swearing to the spate of inner city movies and gangster type movies in the early 90s.

As for me I try not to swear and rarely do. I do admit to swearing in front of my parents at times but nowhere as bad as my sister who uses every word in the book to cuss out the parents.

It's pretty sad that children these days don't honour their parents more and have the courtesy not to swear. Then again, some parents instill it in their children unknowingly by swearing all the time themselves.

Exactly. It's just as stupid as saying that video games cause people to kill. People just look for any excuse to not be blamed for their actions.
