Re: Potentially Great Movies With Terrible Endings

Unbreakable was ruined for me AFTER the freeze frame. If they would have ended it there, I could have really gotten behind it... but as it stands now... *doh*

I don't think that is spoiling anything about that movie for someone who hasn't seen it.

Good call on Identity. I was pissed because that type of ending always seems like such a cheap cop out. It seemed like a bunch of movies released afterwards started doing these weak "twist" endings, like Hide and Seek. Enough with the multiple personality crap already. It's like the writers/directors all got "Shyamalan-itis", which brings me to...

The Village. I actually didn't mind the ending on that one, but the movie as a whole was a heap of dung. I don't see any other way he could have ended it without the whole duration of the movie up until the big reveal being the biggest joke in cinematic history, though. What kind of an ending would you have preferred, Muffin, given the insomnia curing first hour and a half or so? 10 minutes of the women in the village churning butter?

That with Bruce Willis and Sammy J? I can't remember a lot of those movie endings. War of the Worlds got it for me. Forgotten. Signs.

I kind of personally liked the Matrix Revolutions one only because it made me uneasy like they could pick up another Matrix at anytime even though I'm hurt that they don't. I kind of hated LOTR too. My reasoning might be a little cheesy but I didn't really like how the ROTK turned out for the most part. Maybe I should have read the book before I partook in the screening.......

Oh, I've never thought about it but Monty Python and the Holy Grail has a pretty weak ending...

but it's actually really funny to me just because it's so weak.

War of the worlds just sucked overall. The ending was especially bad though.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

Completely agree. That movie was going well, but its like the budget ran out and they had to end it within 5 minutes.

I caught Collateral on HBO the other night, and I had to turn it off before the ending because it pretty much sh*t the bed for everything that you watched previously.

Hate him or not Tom Cruise gave a great performance as the hitman. I wasn't thrilled with Jamie Foxx but he didn't ruin it. Just the crappy, typical Hollywood ending did.
Jamie Foxx deserved his Oscar for RAY, but how did he get a best supporting nom for COLLATERAL? I agree with you that the ending to this movie made a ***1/2 movie a *** movie.

Spoilers (although if you're in this thread, you really shouldn't be worried about spoilers)

The creator of the robots killed himself, framed one robot to show the potential dangers of all other robots?

Something like that I think. That movie wasn't that great to begin with IMO
This movie was not even close to potentially great, bad ending or not.

Probably like 0.001%. But it's not like they "ran out of budget" and decided to give the movie some dumb ending. They just took the dumb ending from the book.

Then the producers made a mistake by basing a movie on a book with a crappy ending

Let's not forget that H.G. Wells wrote "War of the Worlds" at the end of the 1800's...technology had only evolved so far.

As for weak endings, I have to say that while I generally like M. Night's movies (and the denigrating of "Unbreakable" is abominable), the weakest ending to me was "Signs". The suspense, tention, and mood were great...but WATER as the secret weapon! What the hell?!
