Originally posted by BGarrett7I don't quite know where you are getting your information from here, but according to the RIAA, the Beatles (43), the Rolling Stones (42) and Aerosmith (25) all have more gold records than Kiss (24). There are also at least ten solo artist who have more gold records.Comment

Has anyone mentioned the Beach Boys? I hear they were pretty popular and groundbreaking. Re: Greatest American Band of All-Time
The Beach Boys were so far ahead of the Monkees is isn't even funny. The Beach Boys's "Pet Sounds" is one of the 10 best albums ever by most accounts, it inspired The Beatles to start really experiementing with their sound which led to Sgt. Peppers, White Album and Abbey Road. The thing holding The Beach Boys back is that after that peak they sort of regressed back into pure pop mode. They were certainly great at it, but as Brian Wilson slipped further down the road of absolute craziness, the creative force behind Pet Sounds' experimenting was taken out of their music. Thus, The Beatles quickly surpassed them and quit while they were on top. The Beach Boys kept slumping along into the 80s, really diminishing their legacy in the process. They put out some decent stuff for sure, but nothing ever came close to "Pet Sounds."
Also, comparing The Beatles and The Beach Boy's pure pop early days, The Beach Boys doesn't really compare. They were a great band, maybe even the best America has seen, but the top British bands of all time are just on a completely different level.Comment
