Anyway, I'm curious what everybody's favorite Southern Rock band/album is. And if anybody could give me some impressions on the Black Crowes, that'd be awesome.

Southern Rock
I want to explore this genre more. After picking up The Drive-By Truckers "Southern Rock Opera" I had to go back and listen to some Skynyrd and after seeing the Allmans this past week, I'm on an Allman Brothers Band swing at the moment.

Re: Southern Rock
My personal favorite Southern Rock album is The Allman Brothers Band at the Fillmore East. You also can't go wrong with any of the three great CCR albums, Green River, Willy and the Poor Boys, and Cosmo's Factory. -
Re: Southern Rock
CCR, Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker is what I mainly listen to in that genre.
Favorite Southern Rock album would have to be "Its Prounced..." by Skynyrd.Twitter

Re: Southern Rock
I don't really consider The Black Crowes to be Southern rock. Yeah, the first two albums had Southern rock overtones, but I think the Crowes are influenced by the Stones way more than Southern rock.
My favorite current Southern rock bands are Drive-By Truckers and The Allman Brothers Band. Derek Trucks is great, but he's not really Southern rock, either.
Here's a band that has received no mention: The Outlaws. Man, I love The Outlaws. That band represented everything excessive and wonderful about Southern rock. "Green Grass and High Tides Forever" still is my favorite Southern rock tune of all time.
.38 Special was a bit too poppy at times, but it was a decent Southern rock band.
The one popular Southern rock band that I could not stand was Molly Hatchet.
Take care,

Re: Southern Rock
I've seen the Allmans probably 15 times, so they'd have to rank as my favorite southern rock band of all time. They still put on a tremendous show and are still cranking out quality tunes. For a slight departure, check out Gov't Mule. Their "Deep End" series featuring Warren Haynes and Matt Abts playing with a bunch of different bass players is pretty awesome. It's less "southern" than the Allmans, but it still rocks.
Skynyrd, pre-plane-crash, was also fantastic, though I can't say the same for their current lineup. Another southern option, though more blues instead of rock, is Stevie Ray Vaughn. Definite southern flavor though, and a hell of a musician. Another good band nobody has ever heard of is Cast Iron Filter. Check them out if you like mandolin because their mandolin player kills it.
As for Molly Hatchet, I never got them either. But I did like their album covers....Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.
Dash: [muttering] Which is another way of saying no one is.Comment

Now, that being said, if you still have an interest in them, I'd be glad to share.Comment

Re: Southern Rock
Skynyrd, .38 special, Georgia Satellite, Eagles, BTO, Allman Brothers, Neil Young, Tom Petty, are a few off the top of my head without looking at my collection.
I don't know if they all qualify as southern rock, but I get the feeling of southern rock when I hear them.Comment

Re: Southern Rock
Yeah eh, CCR isn't "technically" southern rock, seeing how they're from San Fran and all, but damn if they don't sound like a band fresh off a Louisiana bayou.
I have Live at the Fillmore East: Deluxe Edition and Eat A Peach coming in the mail within the next week and hopefully the ABB show I just went to gets posted soon. I thought they were awesome live. I didn't know what to expect, other than to hear some great slide guitar from Derek Trucks. I was entertained to say the least. I'll have to look into Gov't Mule Sherik. Warren Haynes was great as well. Considering his size, I wasn't expecting him to play like that all. It was fun to watch his fingers move up and down the fret board.
And I agree with you Sherik about Skynyrd. The only Skynyrd stuff I can get into and really enjoy is before the tragic plane crash. Since then they aren't even close to the same band and I have no interest in seeing them live.
As for Molly Hatchet, I'm with everybody else, I don't really see the attraction.

Molly had some solid songs, but you have to be in your 30's or older to get into it! lol. I love Skynyrd, one of my all time favorites. 38 Special was good too, they have a lot of songs I like. Never got into CCR, I think I was to young when they came out!Comment
