    Re: Southern Rock

Eat A Peach and At Fillmore East (Deluxe Edition) came in the mail today. At Fillmore East is awesome. Definitely beats their studio stuff, although that stuff ain't shabby either.

I'm curious. I just got It Still Moves by My Morning Jacket. I've had Z for a while and while Z wasn't a full-fledged southern rock affair, I felt Jim James' vocals were very much influenced by southern rock and country singers and some of their songs on Z had some southern and country vibes. It Still Moves, on the otherhand, feels like an album full of southern rock and country sounds. James' vocals are haunting with a country sound. The songs themselves aren't "kick you in the stomach" southern rock like Skynyrd/Drive-By Truckers but reminds me (primarily because of the jam arrangements) of ABB. Anyway, I'm curious what everybody else thinks about My Morning Jacket and if they would be classified as Southern Rock.

I consider MMJ to be more of a mix of a jam band and Southern rock.

Seemless is a newer band with a metal flare to their southern rock base.

American Minor is a newer awesome awesome awesome southern band. They actually just opened for the Allmans for a lil' bit and will be on that Skynyrd boat cruise thing.

I picked up two more Drive-By Trucker albums yesterday. I haven't listened to them yet, but I'll give each a spin before the night is over. I bought Decoration Day and their new album, A Blessing and A Curse.

I listened to A Blessing and A Curse the other night when I listened to Southern Rock Opera, and wasn't nearly as impressed with it.

I'm not expecting to be floored with AB&AC like I was with SRO, since SRO is not only considered one of the best albums the past 5-10 years, but is DBT's best album. I'm listening to Decoration Day and so far its great, but I doubt anything they do will be as good or impressive as SRO.

I also got a free bonus disc for picking up AB&AC, which features a cover of Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone."

                    Re: Southern Rock

I agree about "Southern Rock Opera." All of DBT's records are good, but "Southern Rock Opera" is their masterpiece so far.

Reminds of Wilco: Every Wilco record is good, but "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" is the band's masterpiece so far.

                          Tendrils, BGarrett:

If you like Wilco and "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot," you MUST see "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart," the superb documentary about the making of that record. Arguably the best music movie I've ever seen. My 7-year-old daughter and I just watched it again for the umpteenth time. I'm breaking her in to good music ...

Great DVD pk, do you live in Indianapolis? I'm going to see Ryan Adams at the Vogue in August, great place for a live band and especially Ryan Adams.
