Re: Pirates of the Carribean 2
I saw the opening midnite showing Thursday night. I really enjoyed the first one but don't know if I was blown away by it, but it was one of the most all-around quality movies I have ever seen. I'd have to say the sequel is one par with number 1. Johnny Depp isn't overrated at all when it comes to this series, he makes it, plain and simple. The other acting is great, I thought Keira's acting was perfect as well. Definately a movie I could see a couple more times.Comment

There were a lot of subplots. Basically everyone was out for their own interests. I think this is to reflect that everyone EXCEPT Jack knew what they wanted. I was disappointed with Jack Sparrow's character. He got played twice: once by Norrington, and another with Elizabeth. I don't know how she connected the dots and figured out the Kraken was after Jack specifically, nor why she wasn't sorry she betrayed him. Nor do I understand why from the beginning it was made out that she was actually attracted to him, even before she could have known anything about Sparrow's situation.
I think Jack wasn't as cool as he was in the first one, which is why I think this sequel is largely not as good as the first. For one thing, he never seemed to have a plan, and thus he got tricked twice in the movie. He seemed to be getting himself into one situation after another without any overarching plan. His mannerisms were downplayed a bit too (and I think that was intentional because when he does have a plan he plays up his buffoonery even more than it really is). It's repeated throughout the movie he doesn't know what he wants, and I think as a consequence the sequel isn't as great as the first, and he seems somewhat more subdued.
Still there were plenty of funny bits strewn throughout the movie, and it consistently entertained.
Also, Davy Jones as the villain seemed somewhat more one-dimensional than Barbossa was in the first one. Barbossa at least had an air of despair and sadness about him. All Davy Jones has is his anger and his ruthlessness.
Anyway, the cliffhanger was decent I guess. I heard it was going to be this rousing element, but somehow it feels empty without Jack Sparrow. The third one should be a lot better though I don't know how Barbossa could have survived the end of the first movie. I just hope we see Jack Sparrow back to true form in the final movie.

All in all, I still liked the movie, but I am just a little disappointed with the way it ended.Comment

Re: Pirates of the Carribean 2
I just finished seeing it with my family this afternoon, I have a few thoughts.
--------------Spoliers below-----------------------------------------
I agree with a review I read on IMDB, the thing was too drawn out, and quite pretensious (sp). I think the whole Canibal Island scene we could have done without.
The Swordplay scenes were no where near as great as in Pirates I, it was very lacklustered, and did not have that "take your breath away / wow! what an awesome heroic event" type feel.
I said this in another thread (the Good times with GRAW if you must know) I pray that Pirates III pulls a "Back to the Future" Trilogy in which, the third bails out the poor form of the second.
The CGI grows old fast, too many beat around the bush stories in it. I liked it, but it was poor form compared to the first. My son liked it, but also hopes for a nice 2007 effort for almost finished part III.
The whole Kraken angle I hated as well. The thing pulled a ship down in one fell swoop in the first ship down, yet he slowly surmounts slow attacks on the following two, including the Black Pearl.
Poor form Jack Sparrow, "by your lead, Mr. Turner".Last edited by Boltman; 07-08-2006, 07:52 PM.Comment
