    Best (free) antivirus software?

I guess my computer now has a trojan horse, or some virus thing (don't ask). The warning keeps popping up every 10 seconds, telling me that I have it. Anyway, whenever it recommends me of some certain software, that stuff ends up giving me spyware.

Now, I've ran McAfee, but it can't find said virus. Can anybody help me out with some good, reliable, and free software for me to get rid of this thing?

    Thanks.

I never had a problem with AVG.

Yeah, AVG has always worked fairly well for me.

Okay, so I tried to download AVG, but during the Setup, it asked me for some sort of Registration Key or Product Number or whatever the hell it is. I don't have one... I thought it was free!

Anyway, if somebody can help me and guide me through this, that would be all good.

It is free. You downloaded the wrong version as the free version should have a registration number builtin.

Between knocking out Norton (though I'm sure some reminants are in the registry), installing AVG Free, and grabbing the Optimizing program from www.pcpitstop.com ($29), my cpu now loads up in about 10 secs. once I type in my user PW.

BTW, pcpitstop is a great site for running online tests for problems and diagnostics.

                    Re: Best (free) antivirus software?

Okay, so I tried downloading all of the things and I gave my computer a reboot. Basically, my computer's now dead. I log in, and nothing comes up. I've waited for a half-hour now. I'm using my upstairs computer to type this.

So, once I find a way to get back on, hopefully I can use all of those things you guys showed me, and hopefully I can be back in business. It's the family computer, and I don't want to be blamed for destroying it.

However, I still don't know what I did (if I did it) for this to happen.

Okay... so I have them, and they're working. But, it doesn't seem to be enough. I quarantine the files, but now I'm trying it again, and I'm getting even MORE spyware and viruses. I was gone for not two hours, and when I returned back home there were 7 pornographic pop-ups on my computer. That cannot continue happening.

                        When does it stop?

I've had Avast! for a year, never had a problem with it.

Well, Spyware will put those pop-ups on.

Like I said... I returned home from an away baseball tournament with these issues. I wasn't going on any sites or what have you. It's problematic because this is the family computer (including parents and little sister), and these things can't keep popping up.

At least my computer's finally running now, though.
