Yes, but McAfee is still McAfee and Norton is still Norton, so free or not, you get all "fun" that goes with them. Stick with AVG or switch to it.

PCworld did a review of AVG a couple of months ago and said it was not very good, so I ran some diagnostics on my computer which was running AVG and sure enough, there were several viruses, trojan horses and spambots. PCWorld said the best overall was Norton with Mcafee a close second. The major issue I guess with McAfee is that installation is somewhat of a pain.

My computer is dead now but when I get a new PC I'm installing McAfee on it and I'll have nothing to do with AVG. Sure it's free but you evidently get what you pay for.

The only problem I have with that review is the fact that several "apparently" knowledgeable "readers" have countered with better reviews. I'm not totally confident with a site and magazine whose success is ad driven going up against the #1 and #2 anti virus programs.

Well forget the review by the magazine then and focus on the fact that I had several viruses that AVG did not detect but other programs did. The review I mention was mostly to point out that some people using it may think it's doing it's job when it's definitely not doing it's job.

IDK about that....my SE would never update past the 5% mark. It would just hang.

I have SE on my laptop, and just updated today's reference file, it should work fine still. I won't update to 2007.

Alright, now I'm a little worried about keeping AVG Free. Maybe I should switch to something else.

So what is the consensus, is Avast or Antivir better in the end? My Trend Micro Antivirus is running out today and Im not willing to pay another 45.00 for another year so I wanted to try something else that wouldnt cost me anything. It seems that the two I mentioned are popular but I cant seem to find out which one might be the better of the two, anyone with experience with one or the other, or possibly both, if you could give me your opinion that would be appreciated.

                          Re: Best (free) antivirus software?

If you use any file sharing applications I would go with Avast.

AVG (which I tend to use more) seems to be a little more resource friendly, but it's unlikely you'll ever notice a difference on any relatively new computer. If you have an older machine I would definitely go with AVG.

AVG doesn't silently update. Not a problem for most people, but incredibly annoying if you happen to be in a full-screen app when it updates.

If that doesn't help, flip a coin, seriously.

You can change the time it updates at though as I usually let it test at a time i'm not online.

Now tell me though, are you running daily updates as well as daily scans in the background? I've had AVG for 3 years, with no viruses as of yet. I've had it where I would download something off Limewire, scanned it with AVG and find a Trojan.

Everyday there are new Trojans being made. At work, I've encountered new Active-X Trojans that give the users viruses from allowing Active-X downloads. Thing is, at work our antivirus DID NOT pick up on these Trojans. I had to scan with a certain spyware program to actually pick it up. So maybe what you had was something that was not in your virus definitions.

                              **EDIT**

Did anybody know that AVG also had anti-spyware? Trying it now and so far it's found some trackers..
