Like I said... I returned home from an away baseball tournament with these issues. I wasn't going on any sites or what have you. It's problematic because this is the family computer (including parents and little sister), and these things can't keep popping up.

At least my computer's finally running now, though.
I was only kidding. Best thing I can say is to use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. I haven't had any problems with spyware since I've been using it.

      When does it stop?
my old computer had a virus and it never was the same even after I did a "factory restore" using over the phone "Geek Squad" guidance. That was my first mistake. They charged me $135.00 and I spent 5 hours of my time probing around with less then efficient instructions at my disposal. The computer store that built my new CPU said that they could completely restore one for $100. If your computer is fairly new and worth salvaging for 100 bucks, that might be an option for you.

        Re: Best (free) antivirus software?

Not fairly new at all... at least, not in terms of info and data that is saved, and the amount of stuff that we have on it.

I can't restore it. We've done that before, and it was just a wreck of how much we had to redo again.

The thing of it is, I don't know how this virus got on or anything... but we've cured it once a couple of years ago (I think it was with your guys' help) and I don't remember how we did it.

Well then, I guess I'll have to keep whatever is on here. Does anyone know of any good pop-up blockers, and how to disable System Alert messages?

        Thanks.

LOL whoops, I just accidentally downloaded SlimBrowser instead of PanicWare or whatever. But... meh, I'll find it.

              Re: Best (free) antivirus software?

I seem to be having a similar problem minus porn ads coming up.

Every time I boot my comp I'm getting hit with a **** load of pop ups, and when I go in to my task manager I try and exit some of the running programs that I think are doing it but it's not letting me get rid of all of them.

I've run adaware and it'll get the files but one be able to delete some of them for whatever reason.

I DLed AVG after reading this thread and it had a whole bunch, I went to the Virus Vault, or whatever it's called, and deleted them (that's what you're supposed to do, right?) and I just restarted my comp and the same thing happened.

              Any advice?

                Re: Best (free) antivirus software?

What I ended up doing was restarting the computer in Safe Mode, ran ALL of my virus/spyware removal programs, deleted all temporary internet files and cookies, cleaned disk space, and then I went into MS Config and basically only have 2 or 3 programs running on startup, and about 10 needed services going. With all of that, it seemed to fix what the problem was. At least... it's not running anymore.

                I hope that helps.

                  Thanks Blzer.

If the same crap happens again then I'll try that out. I think running AVG and Adaware for what feels like a dozen times each might have cleared my problems up.

For those that use IRC, avoid Packetnews.com at all costs. I think that's where I got all this sh*t from.

Try ewido anti-spyware. I think that was definitely the best program for me.

                      Re: Best (free) antivirus software?

Well I guess my problem has returned.

My computer is slow as hell when I go to select the user at the boot up screen.

I'm getting pop-ups again too. I ran the AVG scan twice and it still hasn't gotten rid of the problem. I know exactly where one of the bugs/TH/virus is, but everytime AVG deletes it, it just comes back. And any time I delete it, it comes back.

I'm not sure where to go from here.

Same here. Plus I bit the bullet and bought a registered spyware blocker (Spysweeper). No problems since.

You're going to have to delete the spyware from your registry. I expect there are programs which clean registries, or you can isolate the problem and find the spyware and delete it manually.

Another thing to try is to use the restore function and reset your computer to an earlier date. This doesn't always work, but it did work for me once.

Thanks alot. I DLed ewido and it's found a boat load of files but some of the same things keep happening (it'll find a virus but it won't delete, just keeps coming back).

I believe I was able to take care of my pop up problem, but now every time I go to load my documents, or anything explorer related, explorer will vanish for a split second. And then restart.

I'm not sure what to do.
