Very surprised that the ratings for 24 haven't been through the roof. Of course that's no legitimate criticism of the show.

I think 24 takes a big commitment to watch, or at least that is the way it is perceived by people not watching it. That alone has kept some people I know from watching the show even though they think the show sounds really good.

Thats a great point. People who followed the show from day one will rememeber that Fox almost cancelled the show after the first season because of slow ratings. Thats why there was an alternate ending to day 1 with Jack's wife surviving. Still as long as 24 keeps winning Emmys and Golden Globes, the show will keep getting renewed.

Yeah, to keep up with everything it helps to watch every episode, but missing 1-4 shows a year couldn't hurt too much-I mean the previous show wrap ups are pretty good.

I'm sure the DVD sales are pretty lucrative. They've gotten over $120 from me.

I'd imagine that's the case. It has to be one of the more expensive shows on TV, but they keep making new seasons, so there has to be something.

I think last year was maybe the second best year but season #1 will always be the best for me. What a shame it rated only #76. I have talked to a few people that missed the first year and fell in love when watching the DVDs. 24 is a big committment and its not like a soap opera - if you miss one episode you really get ticked and could miss a ton of great stuff. I almost never watched the show because of it. My in-laws had taped the first show of the first year (wife and I missed it) and we watched it, got hooked and continued to watch it.

It really is a huge committment to watch, you really feel like you have to watch every single episode, and in reality you probably do.

I have not missed ONE EPISODE in 5 seasons, and I really don't think it's possible to miss one and not get a thorough recap, and those ones in the beginning of the show don't work well. Those refreshers are only good for someone who watched last week but needs a little recap.

Some guy I know keeps telling me how he's going to start watching Season 6 without watching the first 5. I tell him there's NO WAY he'll be able to do it and understand what the hell is going on. He doesn't realize how different 24 is.

It didn't help that the first season kicked off 5 days before 9/11.

You can still catch up. You can't turn away a potential fan to the show!

Jaybee, according imdb.com, the first episode aired in November of that year. I forgot about that. Maybe people didn't want to watch a show centered around terrorism.

I had a friend that season 5 was his first one. He thought it was real good, but he wasn't as affected as I was by some of the deaths last season. I came to work pissed off about some of the characters last year and he was like whatever. It's definitely better to see the previous seasons, but you can still enjoy the new season quite a bit without seeing them I guess.

I still think it's ridiculous. You don't get the full effect of 24 unless you watch from the beginning and work your way through. You grow attached, you grow to understand the characters and what they're about. Otherwise, who gives a fig that Tony died?

I started watching the show at the start of season 4. Haven't missed an episode since. I've also gone back and seen the 1st and 3rd seasons, and parts of the 2nd.

That pissed me off again when I watched season 5 on DVD this weekend. I'm still upset that they did that.
