Re: Final Thoughts On The 2006 Summer Movie Season

Wait. Another Die-Hard movie? Wasn't the last one like 10-15 years ago? I don't think so.

Half of the hype behind SoaP wasn't even serious, so I'm not surprised at the low-turn out. I'm sure it will pick up in DVD sales and rentals, if at all.

Anyway, I enjoyed the movies I saw:
    1) Clerks 2
    2) The Descent
    3) Superman Returns
    4) Snakes on a Plane
    5) Over the Hedge
    6) Pirates

    and I believe thats all.

Accepted was the biggest surprise for me. The story is a complete rip-off of Old School, but it made me laugh more times than Ricky Bobby. It isnt a "run out and see it right now!" movie, but it had a lot of laughs.

      Pirates was good.
Da Vinci wasn't great, but not bad.
      X3 was good
Ricky Bobby was good, but not as good as I had hoped(not as good as Anchorman).

I think those are the only 5 I saw.

saw three. both were plesantly entertaining alhtough i was lost the whole time as they were both sequels. the other one, click, was a bit stereotypical. just a movie to make some quick money. although his wife, forgot her name, was worth it, in and it self

            My thoughts:

$8.50 for a ticket, $17 for my wife and I to go, $4 for a drink, $4 for a popcorn...grand total of $25 is WAY too damn much for a crappy movie with twenty minutes of ads and previews of MORE crappy movies.

I'll just buy the DVD, sit back on my comfy couch and watch the movies on my big screen HDTV. There will be exceptions ('Spider-man 3' next year for sure) but by and large, wasting my money on copy cat crap is no longer an option.

How can you guys think horse **** like '40 Year Old Virgin', Dupree, and dozens of other clones are funny...especially when real comic genius like 'Young Frankenstein', 'The Jerk', and 'High Fidelity' are availble on the discount DVD rack at your local electronics chain.

              Yeah, screw opinions!

I'll give it to you that 'Young Frankenstein' is funny, but have you actually seen 40 Year Old Virgin? If you didn't laugh, then you don't have a sense of humor.

Don't buy popcorn and soda and go to a pre-noon show on the weekends. You will spend a total of $8.

I didn't laugh at all...shocked? Maybe it's that I've grown up a bit and no longer get that warm, fuzzy feeling with penis and gay jokes.

Steve Carell is great on 'The Office', and he was also good in 'Little Miss Sunshine'. Virgin just sucked.

Don't know where you live, but here the matinee shows (before 4pm) are still $6.50. And we usually don't buy snacks, only a drink (and smuggle in the candy all clandestine). It's still a waste at $20 a lot of the time, since the DVD on release will be five bucks cheaper.

Those movies are 10+ years old and have been seen thousands of times already. What is your point exactly, that you think new comedies are crap?

It's also your fault that you are seeing a crappy movie. Look at the reviews and ask people you know before you decide to spend the money at the theater.

The normal price here is $8.50, the early afternoon matinee is $6.50 and there is a $4 pre-noon matinee on weekends. It isn't advertised but that is the price. This is an AMC theater, I imagine since the other prices are the same as yours, they have this same deal. I only discovered this a few months ago, it is a great deal whenever I am functioning before noon on a weekend. The theater here doesn't have pre-4:00 PM matinees on weekends(the $6.50 price is weekdays only), but they have the super matinee before noon. Call your theater and ask about their prices before noon on a weekend.

That's cool that you got some cheap before noon fees. I've never heard that before.

As for new comedies sucking...in a word, YES! All the Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn stuff, IMO, blow! It's the same jokes recycled over and over and they are intended for the preteen and high school audience (hence the preponderence of the PG-13 rating). The downfall started with the 'American Pie' series, but at least those were good!

I like coming out of movies with genuine laughs, not feeling that I'm less intelligent, which seems to be the only thing most of these "comedies" have going for them. Different strokes for different folks, though, right? I mean I did laugh quite a bit at 'Dodgeball' and one of my favorites is 'There's Something About Mary', despite my disdain for the starring actors.

Dick and fart jokes are only so funny (when you are 10 and your testicles haven't dropped), as you get older it begins to take more to get real laughs...and if it doesn't there's a whole other host of issues.

*EDIT: So genius was a bit too strong a word. They still eclipse the modern trash though.*
