Who freaking loved the limited commercial breaks? It's great to watch an "hour long" show on a network and the actual playtime be 50+ minutes.

Re: Heroes (NBC, Mondays @ 9PM)
Doesn't NBC own the Sci-Fi Network?
I watched the pilot yesterday and honestly I thought it was god awful. I know it takes time to build up characters, but nonetheless I hated it. I may watch episode two, but if the old TV addage is true that the best episode a show will ever is its pilot, this show will be off the air by January.Comment

How many shows it that true for though? I can't think of any where I like the pilot more than any episode that came after.

Pilot episodes are designed to build interest. So, if it didn't I can understand why you wouldn't be interested in the rest of the show. But, to hear that it's usually the best episode of a show is pretty ridiculous.
I'd be willing to bet that fans of shows going 5+ seasons strong have never even seen the pilot episode."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

First of all, i'm glad I only missed the Pilot so I won't be completely lost when I watch it next week!
Anyhow I have to ask where you found this adage because i've never heard it before and it sounds completely wrong. Pilots are meant to establish the characters, give the viewer a sense of what the show is going to be about and the overall tone of the show. Sometimes the pilot is completely off in tone from the way we remember shows. I'll give two examples:
The Simpsons: Now that show had a HOOORIBLE pilot. You could see the germination of what was to come but that's mostly from hindsight. The animation was way off and the character voices were also off model. The episode itself was cute but if the Simpsons had continued in that vein it would've been dead by season 3.
Seinfeld: I've only seen the pilot once or twice but as I recall it was done very much in the style of the typical sitcom and not the irreverent "show about nothing" style. Who'd know from watching the pilot that it would be one of the best comedy series of the decade.
Also Star Trek had not one, but TWO! Pilots.
Anyhow i'm going to give this show a shot next monday.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

I don't recall where I picked it up but I know I read it somewhere, maybe in a magazine like Entertainment Weekly, maybe in TV Guide.
Now some shows where the pilot was the best of the litter off the very top of my head.
- The O.C.
Great pilot, but within 1.5 years the show was total crap. - One Tree Hill
Again a really good pilot, but unfortunately they really bastardized the pilot by episode 2, and like The OC this show has turned into total crap. - Prison Break
This may be personal preference, but the pilot was amazing and my IMO the best episode. I am highly disappointed by Season 2. - Conviction
The pilot made me think this show would be around 5+ years and was widely acclaimed. The show was off the air within 13 episodes, nuff said.

I can't think of many shows that have had their best episodes as the pilot, and whoever claims that the pilot is generally the best episode of the entire show, and it all goes downhill from there, I would say he has no idea what he's talking about; I find that to be far from my personal experience from watching TV shows.Comment

I liked it. I think it will turn out to be a pretty cool show. Kinda like a reality version of x-men. Just plain-clothes people who can do extroardinary things... Nobody wearing masks or patent leather outfits. ;P
I think Ali Larter's character is going to grow into a super-villian. Her reflection just seemed to get too much of a thrill out of the things that transpired.Comment
