I still say the elevator scene is one of my favorite scenes in movie history. It just blew my mind when I first watched it.

        ****MAJOR SPOILER WARNING****

My big question: Did Walberg kill Damon because:

        1. He was in cahoots with Nicholson's crew (which makes the entire first part of the movie make no sense, since he knew DiCaprio was the spy all along) and was getting revenge for Nicholson

        or because:

        2. He was honest and knew Damon was the rat in the police squad and was responsible for Sheen's and DiCaprio's deaths?

Sorry, I thought there were already major spoilers in the thread. I'll go back and add a spoiler warning, which I realize won't help you. I sincerely apologize for that. I hate having movies spoiled for me and I can't believe I did that. :-(

Your #1 brings up a very good question that could only be answered if a sequel comes about. I think they did a good job leaving certain holes for a sequel in mind.

If that's the case it makes much more sense. You still have to wonder why Damon's ex-girlfriend didn't expose him for what he was before he got to get all of the glory. She had the envelope DiCaprio gave her.

She was told not to open it unless something happened to him. My belief is that what Leo had written was something along the lines of contacting Walberg's character and letting him know the truth about what happened, since he was the only one who knew about him being the undercover agent.

Loved the movie, great acting by everybody.

If they are going to make sequals then they are probably going to follow infernal affairs story lines. Part 2 is going to be a prequel for sure. I've only read what infernal affairs is about but I'm after watching departed i'm going to rent them all for sure.

I have all 3 of the Infernal affairs movies from HK that inspired the Departed. Part's 2 and 3 tend to take on a saga feel much like the Godfather does. if you want to get them, i suggest ordering them directly from HK. you can get them at dddhouse.com. It's super cheap for hk dvd's there and they are legal!!!
