Mark Cuban was quoted recently as saying that anyone who buys YouTube is a moron because it's only a matter of time before they get their pants sued off for copyright infringement. He said the only reason they haven't been yet is because nobody has gotten enough money together to initiate ligitation.

Re: Google to buy YouTube for $1.6 Billion

I wonder if YouTube has a clause or something where a user uploads copyrighted material, the rightful owner can contact YouTube and have the video removed immediately.

I remember when the Denis Leary clip from NESN was up there and it lasted less than 24 hours. I had the clip bookmarked and when I tried to go back to it there was a message in huge red font "THIS COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL HAS BEEN REMOVED BY NESN"

If YouTube allows that, does someone still have grounds to sue?

youtube has removed copywritten content at the request of copyright holders. I think now that google will be buying them, it won't be hard for them to put up a broader filter that stops some of the stuff from going up in the first place. I mean you can rename a movie something else, but it's gonna be hard to find in a search.

Stuff like UFC clips come down real fast, unless you made it a "highlight" video yourself with music..

But good for youtube. I think it's a flash in the pan, and if they can get a billion dollars for it..get it. There's no way they can make money off it through annoying ads or fees, since it's been free forever.

Ridiculous profit for YouTube, given the length of time they've been in existence.

          Good for them!

Re: Google to buy YouTube for $1.6 Billion

so can they bank all that money and run? ive never understood selling of companies completely?

it seems like the money is tied in somewhere and or they wont get it all at once. it sounds alittle too simple than just giving 1.6 billion dollars to a few people.

anyone care to explain how this works out?

half the appeal of youtube is the copyright sensitive stuff. once a bigger company takes over, its over with. itll be just like any other website.. the creavity of people is nice and gets many views. but some just want info like the IGN videos or the latest daily show funny clip. i feel thatll be gone with the new deal.

video google has copyrighted videos as well. and they allow much longer footage. upwards of maybe 3 hours.

I wonder how this will all tie in and if they possibly combine, which service "stays".

Look at what Myspace, & FaceBook went for, YouTube is a steal for google.

Myspace has been valued at over 15 billon for Fox. Youtube is worth at least 1/15th of that.

the point of a buyout is that the current owners get the money for the ownership of their company. They can stay on or do whatever...they don't own the company anymore. It's not like youtube is a publicly traded company either.

Why do you think all those dot com "CEO's" were rich as hell? Someone bought their trash company for inflated prices. Even Mark Cuban started out that way.

Well this sucks for youtube browsers and uploaders. I guess that'll be the end of me looking at great NFL broadcast video etc etc.

I'm pretty sure he also said that there currently isn't really anyone worth suing, just a bunch of smaller investers...if/when Google buys it, then they become a huge target worthy of a lawsuit. Believe me, copyright holders will be much more likely to sue Google than they are the current owners of YouTube.

Google went public last year, and the best price the average joe could of gotten was around $75 and its sitting around $410 today.

I myself had 10 shares of google at $175 and sold them at $315. Now the stock is kinda consistent in its trading range.

Newscorp which is Fox owns Myspace. And that part of the company is valued at 15 billion.

Facebook is still on the market, with Viacom ready to snatch it up. Since Fox is kicking the hell outta of MTV for the teen demographic.
