oh and another thing. baseball is not america's pastime. maybe it was a long time ago, but nowadays it's american football baby, as it rightfully should be.

Re: The Sports and Entertainment Blasphemy Thread
Michael Vick ruined Virginia Tech.
I started at VT in '97 when Al Clark led the team. Campus/school was much more enjoyable then. We were a top 25 program where some smaller bowl victories weren't out of the question.
The moment Vick set foot on campus, the whole demeanor of VT changed. All of a sudden we were a "power." We were expected to win all of the time. Nothing short of a top 5 season was expected by the new breed of Tech fan.
Even worse, as the school got more popular, the whole way of life at Tech changed. More students came pouring in despite the "increase" in standards. Educational programs got cut as the school decided to build onto the stadium, not once, but twice, before completely gutting and rebuilding it. The entire personality of the campus changed. I lost several good teachers to the new VT.
As for our football program, we are now Miami North. No discipline. No team players. Just a bunch of thugs trying to play their way into the NFL. Pathetic.
Anyone who went to VT from 97-02 has to either know exactly what I am talking about or be completely blinded by the "status" of their alma mater.
I think it has to depend on the team. I used to love baseball, but the Royals ownership destroyed my faith in the team and sport. Perhaps this is because I am not a 'real' fan, but when you watch your favorite team destroy itself and dig a deeper and deeper whole every year you begin to question your allegence.Comment

Some things to get off my chest.
Best thread idea since the "What the hell is on your mind" thread
The Dave Matthews Band is so overrated it is not even funny. He is not the song writer people give him credit for. They are no different than 100 other bands who sound nearly identical to them, they just lucked into a cult following, mainly by college girls who also support boy bands, nuff said as to their musical prowess.
Chris Jericho is the most underrated wrestler of all time. He never got the respect he deserved from WCW or WWE. He easily deserved a similar push and career to what Shawn Michaels had.Comment

That's why they say any team can win on any given day. They're all professionals and all very good at what they do. Seriously, before the year who thought the Detroit Tigers would play in the World Series? That's why they play the games and don't use a computer to decide them...Comment

- I am convinced that actresses in the Golden Age of Hollywood are better ovrall then actresses today. Yeah, actresses today are better looking but they're FLAT when it comes to personality. Now don't get me wrong there were some true hot female stars back in the day but they were the exception to the rule. I'm talking about stars like June Allyson, Betty Hutton, Rita Hayworth etc etc. They were ok looking but they had CHARM oozing out of their pores. I'd take a slightly less attractive woman any day if she's got personality and spunk to her.
- Will Ferrell is overrated, I've followed his career since his SNL days and to tell you the truth he's not as funny as most people make him out to be. At least he's good at doing roles where he's a little "different" from everybody else. Apparently he has a more serious comedy/drama coming out called Stranger then Fiction. It will be VERY interesting to see how it does.
- MC Hammer gets ripped unfairly but I always liked that he had a positive message in his music. Sure he ripped off Rick James in his biggest hit song but other then that the man seemed to be a geniune nice guy with a message.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: The Sports and Enterta
Now my big issue, I don't understand why soccer is forced down our throats in this country right now. Why can we not realize our limitations and just give it up. There is no excuse, as much as I know people will come up with one, for losing to Ghana. Truthfully as an American I find that to be disgustingly embarassing. But nonetheless ESPN seems determined to force this down our throats until we give in.
Meanwhile, they treat a truly great sport like lacrosse like it is a red headed step child. They show some Major League Lacrosse games on ESPN2, but never at a time when more than 5 people can watch. They used to give the NCAA Men's Lacrosse tournament some respect, but now the Men's Final 4 is moved to ESPN2, and the championship game is on at what, 11am EST. That is a great way to get some west coast people into the game, air it 8am on a Memorial Day, I am sure they'll watch. What is about lacrosse that ESPN doesn't want to embrace. It has all of the qualities most Americans love, it is relatively high scoring, it has some violent hitting, it is fast moving (maybe too much so?). It has the strategies of basketball as well. What is there that doesn't warrant this sport getting a huge push by ESPN? Is it that the college game isn't corrupted by the ghetto thugs that College Football and Basketball have? Is it so bad that some of the most best colleges in the world are excel at the sport? Do they assume because Princeton and Johns Hopkins are good that no one will watch. Well, partly we can blame Title IX for ESPN's darling programs like USC not having the sport, but why not push it some more? We have North America's oldest game, a sport dominated by the USA and Canada, ESPN's market, yet the World Championships aren't even a footnote, yet our Men's Soccer team going winless and embarassing 300 million people against Ghana deserves to pushed to no end.

Firstly I wasn't all that big of a Tupac fan, but he spoke truth. Truth about what's going on in the world and in his own environment at the time, childhood etc... Nowadays all rappers rap about are Jewelry, Women, and Guns. Half of them haven't even held a gun in their lives let alone shot one.
Biggie, his flow and lyrical delivery is one of the best off all time. I don't know if he's the greatest of all time but he's on my short list. His lyrical content wasn't as relevant as tupac's but his talent made him not only famous with hardcore fans but with mainstream as well. Jay-z has been really the only one to match that kind of success.
People just love to paint a general brush over these guys and call them "gangsters" without listening and understanding what they were saying. A lot of those critics don't even know the name of an album they release much more the lyrical content."Your character is who you really are, your reputation is what you're perceived to be by others" - John Wooden(former UCLA head coach)Comment

Re: The Sports and Entertainment Blasphemy Thread
That's a great rant on soccer MassNole. Personally I can't be bothered to watch it regularly. (I like the WC tho and did see that great game between T&T and Sweden) I think one reason why ESPN shoves it down our throats is that there are quite a lot of people with a european background living in North America. Also the game is very popular with kids and soccer moms these days.
I've watched some lacrosse and it's very interesting but I don't really like it. We get NLL games here during the season with the Canadian teams (mostly the Rock) and the Rock gets pretty good ratings and GREAT attendence. It's a shame that it doesn't get more exposure because it's a great sport that combines a lot of things people like.
BTW Jim Brown is said to be the greatest lacrosse player in US history!Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Someone was talking about Chris Jerricho being underrated? Are you joking me? Seriously!?!? I'm not talking about him being overrated or anything. I'm talking about the type of wrestling. It's not a REAL sport. People can think whatever the hell they want when it comes to fake results. I could immediately become a better wrestler than Chris Jerricho if the WCW or WWE ...etc... were to write up a script that would allow me to win all of my wrestling matches.
On the same point, I can't believe people actually watch that garbage over real sporting events. I know an overwhelming majority of people would be pretty damn steamed if the NBA, MLB, NFL, or NHL were scripted events, and the results were pre-written.
I just don't understand the appeal (not to mention its a bunch of guys in underwear... wtf?!?!?).
I'll say this... the girls are usually rediculously hot, but even watching them fight is personally a waste of my god-damn time.SAN ANTONIO SPURSComment

I guess the wrestlers that get hooked on pain killers just imagine the pain they feel day in and day out eh?
I'm not saying it's the greatest thing to watch or invest your time with but it's enjoyable (at least the old school stuff) It allows you to suspend disbelief from time to time.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: The Sports and Entertainment Blasphemy Thread
And anybody who can make a song like "Unbelievable" does not have borderline talent.
Though, they both definitely benefited tremendously by their deaths. If you think about it, I'd say 95% of the white audience that listens to hip-hop today didn't listen to it before those two were killed. As I've said a million times, tons of white kids say that Tupac is their favorite rapper and the best rapper ever to live, but NONE of them have been able to name three of his albums. They listen to his greatest hits and that's it. Also, neither really had a chance to fall off or get caught up in the mainstream, hip-pop BS that started around '97. IMO, Life After Death was 3.5/5 album. Biggie was gonna start falling off/selling out/going pop big time. I honestly believe by now people would have been yearning for Ready To Die Part II as much as Nas freaks have been fiending for a true sequel to Illmatic.
There has not been a decent Hip Hop album in over a decade.
