    Windows Vista

Went to a Vista presentation at Microsoft today. It looks as if they have adopted the console way of starting programs. No installs is what they said (although Office 2007 was installed), no registry adds or .dll's installed. Hopefully this will expand PC gaming somehow.

    Re: Windows Vista

I'm definately interested in upgrading, since my PC is only a few months old and I still play a lot of PC games. The new interactive/sharing features should be good with the new Zune I picked up for my wife.

Heres the specs that is on the RC1 disks I got (32 & 64bit)

      1ghz 32 bit or 64bit
      1gb RAM
DX9 support with a WDDM driver. 128mb video memory (minimum), Pixel Shader 2.0 and 32bit per second (this gets you the see through title bars, if u dont meet the specs then you dont get the fancy title bars)
      40gb HD with 15gb free
      DVD drive
      Audio, Internet capability

They also mentioned how you can use a USB KEY to cache which give your system a boost in speed.

If anyone has any questions I can try and answer from what I seen. The presentation was 40 minutes Business justification and 20 minutes of acutal Vista.

I'm running it on one computer and it looks nice, but I haven't really had time to mess around with it. It does drop my wireless connection a lot.

My CPU will run it fine, but dropping the wireless might be an issue though.

Any incompatibility with older software? I know it's likely to be an unknown for a while, but just curious (primarily older games).

They just went over what they implemented for their partners and said that 90% of the programs ran. Of course Im sure none of the programs tested were games.

              Re: Windows Vista

Will Vista implement a way to search for something that is contained within a file? For instance if I save an email and somewhere in the email it says "Firefly" can I somewhere in Vista type in Search, Find, "Firefly" and it will locate that email? This is something i've wanted on PC's for years and I think I read Vista will do it but not sure.

Also, visually does it look more "mac-like" as i've always thought the mac OS was alot better looking than Windows XP.

If you want to know what Vista will look like download Windowblinds 5.1 and the "Arrow" skin. It's a 90% knockoff on how Vista will look. From some of the impressions with those who have seen it, they say it looks very slick.

I'm running OSX and while it's a nice looking interface I like Vista's GUI and the Aero look better.

p.s. keep in mind XP is a 2D GUI and OSX is in 3D a.k.a. "Aqua".

How stable is it, does it crash much? Also how is the boot up time compared to XP? Does it have a feature where you can save your desktop and windows to flash ram type thing like IBM used to have on some of their computers? This speeds up boot up time to practically zero. I'd love to have that feature!

very stable rarely, any problems other than compablity, but those problems should be fixed by final release, boot up it farely quikc to me, im not sure if that feature is in but i did hibernate and it came up very quick, windows aero is a very nice gui it's works in real time so if your watching a video and are doing something on IE and hit the windows logo and tab you can see both moving in real time

The search reminds me of the search in Firefox, it kinda replaces the RUN comand in current OS's. You type in Word and it shows Word 07, Wordpad and any documents that contain the word Word. It does search email aswell. The new Outlook has the same feature but it can be done within the OS, it must be cataloged because it is found instantly. Visually it looks good, yes Mac like. They had a right nav section where he had a clock and some news that was kinda on a ticker, he then picked up the clock and moved it onto the middle of the desktop.

Sounds great, thanks man! When I get my income tax i'm gonna get a new laptop with Vista so I'm looking forward to it. My main thing is stability and spyware protection, I hate the fact that crap installs on my current XP computer without me being asked and I have to go and remove it manually.

They said they have combated that aswell. You will be logged in as a standard user with limited rights so these web installs cant happen. Of course when Admin
rights are needed you get prompted, kinda like a firewall prompts to allow, and then it slips back into standard mode.

well there's stuff out now that you can use if you just want to change the look of XP. I used Aston Shell for a bit, which completely changes everything. You can get OSX style buttons and all that. Highly built around your ability to customize it as well. I just think not many people will really need to upgrade to Vista, if they're in it for the slick looks.
