Again this pay-off is simply speculation & not FACT....
I think the speculation is fueled by the fact that it would be ******** of Paramount to abandon their dual-format support and exclusively jump aboard the ship of the format that is clearly losing the war right now. The 300 BD outsold the HD-DVD version 2:1. HD-DVD is currently running at a 35% sales clip in terms of the overall high def disc market. And prior to this move, HD-DVD was one studio away (Universal) from having no reason for existing.

It's crazy to assume that this move was done without a financial payoff, since no market analyst in their right mind would look at the landscape right now and decide to exclusively support the format that's losing, unless it was somehow in Paramount's interests to simply extend the length of the format battle.

Who really cares if MS paid Paramount to join HD-DVD? Only people upset are the Blu-ray fanboys. Sony paid off Fox, Disney, Lionsgate to go Blu-ray only, but that's ok I guess. This thread has made me laugh for the last few pages.

No, everyone should be upset because this moves us further away from a unified format and means that fewer people will be willing to adopt the high definition format, which means continued poor sales for BD and HD-DVD compared to DVD. And since you brought them up, the difference with Fox, Disney, and Lionsgate is that they chose BD because of its security features, not because they were bought out by Sony (who btw, owns the BD technology, unlike MS and HD-DVD).

I have a PS3 and a bunch of BDs, but if BD were about to die out and something like this happened with the parties reversed, I'd be just as upset. All anyone wants is one format so we can all go about our lives, whatever that one format is. But it's been amusing to watch people try over and over again to turn this into a "fanboy" argument.

Eh, still doesn't bother me. I have both, I'll continue to buy movies the same way I do now. One will eventually die, and dual format players will be the norm. Won't mean anything to me, and I don't care if it takes 10 years for a unified format. Biggest reason I didn't put all my eggs in one basket. Saw this happen before with VHS and Betamax.

Alright, I was thinking this was bad news for the industry at large. But now that I know that you personally are not affected, I feel ok about it now.

Eh, I don't feel it's bad for the industry. Movies will still come out on one of the HD formats, whether it be HD or BD. I look at it this way, I own a 360 and a PS3. They both essentially do the exact same thing, have the exact same games. Both sides have some exclusive titles. I see it no different for movies right now. I don't see why so many are so bent out of shape over this. Would one format be better? Sure. Would one game system be better? Sure. But it hasn't happened yet.

If Lionsgate, Disney, and Fox all announce allegiance with HD-DVD in the next few months, is it still bad for the industry?

Again, I don't see the big deal, it's not like anything is changing other than Paramount movies not being on Blu-ray any longer. Sorry, it's making you so upset, but it's not me.

Plus EG, the BluRay fanboys also forget about Target and Walmart being paid "X" amount of dollars by Sony to exclusively carry their format.

Toshiba owns the HD-DVD technology and MS has a small stake in it since they were the ones that helped in designing the HDi.

Again, this is why I think that this thread is starting to get to a point where we need 2 seperate HD-DVD and Blu-Ray threads.

Plus, there are some rumblings going on that Warner might be next to jump.

I own both and if one format dies, I will always still be able to watch my movies on either player that I own. Its the Blu-Ray fan mentality to get bent out of shape.

I want to ask those that are having a heart attack over this, did you see any of the people that support both formats or even just HD-DVD on these boards start getting all upset when Target & Walmart became BD exclusive? Or that some movies such as 300 sold 2:1 on BD as opposed to HD-DVD?

Like I have always said, anyone that is a fan of Sony product.............its always a heated discussion.

Maybe they saw that even thought 300 sold 2:1 for BR if you compare the attach rate for 300 it saw a better attach rate for HD DVD than it did for BR. Maybe they didn't want to continue spending thousands of dollars to continue authoring on BR & continue to lose $.

Maybe they had a riff with a STUDIO within BR CAMP & that was their reasoning for leaving. Maybe, Maybe, Maybe..........

Bay to Paramount: "No Blu-ray, No Transformers 2!" (UPDATED 2)

UPDATE: (8/21/07, 7:45pm) As Cinematical points out, it seems cooler heads have prevailed. After his site spent the better part of the day pummeled by traffic, Bay's earlier message was removed. Later in the day, a site administrator posted this message: "I spoke to Michael a few minutes ago. He said he just wants people to know that we should be able to view his movies in the format of our choice. Period. Nothing more, nothing less." In other words, Bay's still upset, but 'Transformers 2' won't be another victim of the high-def format war. (Thanks to Thomas for the tip!)

Michael Bay is losing it, now he's a HD-DVD supporter. LOL

"Last night at dinner I was having dinner with three blu-ray owners, they were pissed about no Transformers Blu-ray and I drank the kool aid hook line and sinker. So at 1:30 in the morning I posted - nothing good ever comes out of early am posts mind you - I over reacted. I heard where Paramount is coming from and the future of HD and players that will be close to the $200 mark which is the magic number. I like what I heard.
As a director, I'm all about people seeing films in the best quality possible, and I saw and heard firsthand people upset about a corporate decision.
So today I saw 300 on HD, it rocks!
So I think I might be back on to do Transformers 2!"
