Why did it take Netflix deciding to ditch HD-DVD to change your mind?

I don't understand the reasoning. You held out this long and you were an advocate that it doesn't make sense to sell them all blah blah blah.

Stick to your guns. You have plenty of movies in Hi-def and I'm sure you have some HD-DVD players, right? Don't throw that all away... use 'em for the bedroom or something.

Yeah, I see your point. I only have one HD-DVD player, the 360 add on. I have like 25 HD-DVD's, it's not just the NetFlix announcement though.

It's everything, Universal not pushing the HD-DVD version of American Gangster, lack of any announcements, etc.

It's dead. I feel like that guy holding on to Laserdiscs when DVD hit the market.

Yeah, it looks like after today's blow.......Blu-ray has really won here. I hate saying this, but Toshiba just needs to concede. I love the HD DVD format, but all their doing is now prolonging the format war.

Well, I think that will start my fire sale. I know people are saying it's stupid to ditch the movies and that they will enjoy their HD-DVD's, well, I'm anal. I'd rather have them all on one format.

Time to go through and figure it out, what I'm going to do.

I don't blame you, I am the same with having everything on one format.....but I have too many movies to try and ditch at this point. I'll enjoy the HD DVD's I have, if I come across any cheap titles I will be picking them up. With this news, my goal depending on where these formats are by the end of the year would be to find a combo player a year from now that is complete spec and sell off my stand players. This way I can clear up my AV rack of 1 unit.....but really need to wait for Samsung to release their 2.0 spec combo player at the end of Fall.

It will take Universal forever to get the movies I have on HD DVD to Blu-ray, no way I'm going back to SD-DVD for those.

I see what you mean man... I'm the same way.

Think of it this way... you can use that money you'd end up spending to "re-do" your library elsewhere. That extra money can go to... new Blu-Rays or something.

Oh, and by the time you really want those movies in your library on Blu-Ray they will be MUCH cheaper....

I love the HD DVD format, but all their doing is now prolonging the format war.

When do you guys think the best time to stock up on the movies will be? I'm still holding out for the official death-announcement before I start going nuts with purchases. I think thats when prices will be rock bottom.

I hope Toshiba makes a sweet combo player. Their hardware is so much better than the competitors.

On HD-DVD's? Now is as good as any. They are practically all 50% off on Amazon, on Ebay they are dirt cheap, etc.

There will be a time later on, where they will go up in value as laser disc did since they will start to become rare as they aren't produced any longer.

You probably paid between 15-20 bucks for each of those DVDs, will sell them for less than 15 and then will rebuy them on bluray (The ones that are out for bluray) for 15-20 (or more). I just dont get that reasoning. With that said, list your hd-dvds here and ill buy some from you.

Also, I'm not willing to wait to get Beowulf and American Gangster. We could be into 2009 before those come out on bluray.

Almost all of my HD-DVD's were bought on BOGO's, so including my 10% HD discount, I was paying 17 bucks for 2 HD-DVD's, or 20 bucks for 2 HD-DVD's. The one's I've got rid of so far, I'm down only about $10 including buying the BD conuterparts. So I don't see it as a loss. I won't buy the BD counterpart until I find it on a deal anyway, like another BOGO.

Beowulf comes out on BR in March in the UK... you can import it...

I'm still keeping all my HD-DVD stuff. I don't have that much of it (10-15 movies?) and the Toshiba A3. I figure I'll just keep the movies I have on HD-DVD and start buying everything new on Blu-Ray.

Then again, I'm not even replacing all my SD-DVD's with their HD counterparts. Just not worth spending all that money to me... Nor do I feel like dealing with the hassle of selling all that stuff!

Beowulf comes out on BR in March in the UK... you can import it...

As long as HD DVD is still in business, they are a small roadblock in the HDM format war..... But no matter how you look at it, HD DVD is prolonging HDM from taking off at this point when the entire deck is stacked against them.

Joe, I bet these guys man just sit back and stay quiet. Like they have with every other announcement. I am a bit disappointed in the HD DVD Group, Toshiba, and Universal for not standing tall when the WB Announcement went down.

2009.....how about 2010 or 2011 especially with Paramounts contract expiring January 2009 and I think Universal's is either till June 2008 or December 2008, can't remember.

That is the thing, HD DVD is in a similar situation that Laserdisc was in. I hope that Sony wises up with Blu-ray or else they will wind up in the same boat as Laserdisc and HD DVD. Once the battle shifts to Blu-ray vs. DVD, Sony has a lot of work to do and arrogance won't help them win it. If they continue to bump up the prices of their hardware, which they have been doing since the WB announcement...........it will be the death of Blu-ray.

The consumers don't want to spend more than what they are right now on DVD, yet even more that people are uneducated when it comes to Hidef medium. Today I was at Walmart, an older guy was looking at a few HD DVD movies planning to buy them even though he has a PS3. Once I told him that they wouldn't work on the PS3, he put them back down.

Sadly you're right... but I don't think Sony is the only person to blame with the misinformation in regards to HDM... this "war" is to blame, and all the participants...
