Star Wars for me. I've seen the first Lord of the Rings and it was pretty good. Haven't seen the later two but as someone else said, no big desire to do so. Star Wars and Empire are two of the best movies of all time though. And while Jedi wasn't the best, it was still a very solid movie.

No question original star wars. I enjoyed LOTR, but will most likely never watch them again. Star wars is timeless, and will never be forgotten, but LOTR will. It didn t break any boundaries like star wars did, and was in essence a remake of something already done, albeit in a another media form.

If you're talking about LOTR being a "remake" in the sense of it being adapted from the books, then you should also know that Star Wars fiction predated the first movie. If you're talking about those terrible two animated features, it's not a "remake" of that either.

I guess it's fair to say that LOTR "will be" forgotten if you mean by you. I'm sorry, I just have a little thing about statements so definite. It's not a fact, unless of course, you are speaking on your behalf and are pretty sure you will forget about it.

As far as LOTR not breaking any boundaries. Well, how about being one of, if not the biggest film project ever made, with a budget of over 270 million. Not only was the project itself immense, but the films rank as the 11th, 5th, and 2nd most successful movies of all time; the trilogy itself is the most successful of all time. How about the 17 (nominated for 30) collective Academy Awards which is a record for any trilogy? How about the groundbreaking special effects? Is that not enough to "break any boundaries"? How about Peter Jackson's innovation of filming the 3 movies at once? Surely that broke some boundaries.

Please take no offense mind you, as this is not an attack on your opinion in general. If you like Star Wars better, that's fine. I am not trying to persuade you in that regard. This was mainly directed to the baseless comments that were written as if they were factual and set in stone. That's all, so please don't take this the wrong way.

As for myself, I saw the Star Wars trilogy for the first time when I was really young, like 6-7 in the mid 80s. I wasn't a big space fan, and it didn't appeal to me. When I got older, I sat through and watched through again, I thought it was a decent story but I guess that it now being the mid 90s and technology of course had progressed, I still wasn't too impressed. I guess I can see why people like it, it's just that those things don't really appeal to me. With Lord of the Rings, I'd read the books beforehand, and I thought that the movie translated the books perfectly and gave me more. I came out of the theaters really impressed and unable to ask for more. That's why I choose LotR over SW.

LOTR hands down. Why, well the lotr story line is very cohesive and easy to follow. The characters from the book were brought to life quite effectively and the special effects were crazy, who do you choose Chewbacca or Gollum?

Also, someone had mentioned that SW has a lasting appeal and that if you see SW on tv or lotr on tv, sw is easier to watch. Well, if I saw blade on tv and lotr on tv I would watch blade. LOTR is the kind of movie you have to prepare yourself to sit down and watch because it is long and involved, if I don't catch it from the beginning I can't watch it (which is why I purchased all 3 extended versions). Lotr is not a fast food kind of movie, it is too be enjoyed slow and in its entirety, like a good meal.

It does, but not as cohesive as lotr. Question, was SW written in its entirety when the first movie was made, were there plans for 1-6 from the beginning or were the last movies just afterthoughts? Lotr was a series of novels written with a defined purpose from the fellowship to return of the king. The story is more cohesive than SW to me because of the fact that the author knew where he was going. I don't think Lucas knew where he was going with SW at all times.

In their day they were, IMO, more of an impact on not only entertainment but technology advancements as well.
So comparing each trilogy to the time frame they were released, SW is the clear winner for me.

Definitely Star Wars. I agree with the poster who said Return of the King was better than Return of the Jedi, but the first two movies in the Star Wars trilogy are much better than the first two LOTR movies.

From what I remember hearing all 6 Star Wars eps were originally written as one long *** movie, but George Lucas cut them up into six. Maybe it was just the first trilogy that was written as one movie and cut up into three, not sure. I don't see how there's no continuity, they flow perfectly to me while still doing a great job of introducing new characters, challenges and settings.
