i thought that was a good scene as well. I like how they have built it up and now the stage is set!!

Of course, we know how it unfolded in history but it will be cool to see how they show it.

btw, anyone else see Pullo and Vorenus taking opposite sides in the upcoming Octavian v. Antony battle? i see the story between Pullo and Vorenus having a dramatic ending.

    SPOILER ALERT

i was glad to see Vorenus's kids in the wagon at the end. They arent dead after all. I wonder if Vorenus or Pullo will ever find out they are still alive?

Unfortunately, Comcast in my area does not have OnDemand.

I was pretty PO'd about that as well. It should either be on tonight or Wednesday, so I can wait.

QFT...very well written and acted. I love that there are no "star power" in this thing. No one to rest on their name alone. Everyone pulls their weight on the performance side.

The scene between Brutus and Ceasar at the end of Season 1 was outstanding. Everyone was expecting the old "E tu Brute" line, but I liked how the actors delivered it with their emotions and expressions instead of having him actually say the words. You could just see it in Ceasars eyes as he was bleeding to death....Like WTF, Brutus? Brilliant. Then to have Brutus say it to his mother was classic.

One thing I continuously find funny though...why does everyone in ancient Italy and Egypt have British accents? Even funnier, Eirene the former slave has a French-ish accent.

I took this off of IMDB.com

"The actors' regional British accents were used with effect to enhance the portrayal of the social distinctions of ancient Roman society; however after initial previews, some of the stronger accents were re-dubbed and toned down for American audiences."

Re: Rome: Season 2 Premiere Tonight 9 ET

It's obvious that the swearing has increased ten-fold so far this season, but I see that as a way for the writers to further show the turmoil brewing in Rome. Rome is on the brink of chaos. Caesar and Pompey ran a much tighter ship than Mark Antony does. This is clearly illustrated in the scene where Mark Antony storms out of Atia's Villa, notices the men fighting on the streets, then turns his gaze and continues on his way. Mark Antony is literally turning a blind eye to the problems in Rome.

Without strong leadership the city will tear itself apart. We're starting to notice how there is a large amount of xenophobia among the lower classes. The "gangsters" hate the foreigners, roman citizens are losing jobs to the massive slave population in the city.

By focusing more on the collegia, and including more harsh language, the writers are vividly showing us that Rome is breaking apart. Caesar is dead, and along with him the stability of Rome.

And to talk a little about the scene where Vorenus breaks the statue. We (a judeo-christian influenced culture) have no problems telling the difference between a statue of a god and that god itself. However, for the romans, a statue of a god *was* effectively that very god. Breaking the sacred statue was very much like breaking the goddess/saint herself. Vorenus wasn't just showing that he disrespects the gods, but rather that he is completely fearless of them. That he is so tough that he could actually kill them.

Now, I refuse to believe that Vorenus has changed all that much. You can kind of see a moment right after he smashes the statue that he falters, and has to regain his composure. Vorenus is completely conflicted. On one hand, he is a staunch catonian who believes in the pure divinity of the Roman Republic, including all of it's gods; but on the other hand, he is tormented and feels like he has been cursed by those very gods, so why should he care?

The 1st season chronicled Vorenus' ultimate fall. In the second episode we found out that Niobe wasn't faithful. We know the whole way through that Vorenus' world was going to come crashing down on him - even while he seemed to be rewarded right and left. In the second episode of season 2, we find out his children are still alive. Now we get the exact inverse. We get to watch Vorenus be seemly punished throughout the season, while still knowing that he's going to be ultimately rewarded in the end.

This show is a historical drama, but it's main focus isn't on Caesar and Pompey and Antony and Octavian. It's mainly about the two soldiers who are stuck in the midst of this turbulant time. Vorenus and Pullo are the main focus of this series, and the two seasons fit together like the Yin and the Yang. In season 1 Vorenus has the high ground while Pullo sinks low. In season 2 their roles switch.

Thanks for that ZB9, very insightful. I agree with the many points that you make, this season (unfortunately final) will be very interesting. It looks like those two (Pullo and Veronus) will be torn apart quite soon with the impending civil war.

That's definitely the outcome I've been expecting for this season. Vorenus owes his loyalty to Antony while I think Pullo will go with Octavian. It should be interesting.
