I'm not really into fairy tail type movies. In fact I've never watched any of the Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter movies. I lumped this movie in with those based on it's preview. But since it was one of the higher rated movies in Netflix's "view instantly" selections, I watched in anyway.

At first I was turned off by the subtitles. But my interest in the movie progressed as it moved along, and I found that it was one of the most well done movies I've watched in a while. I'm glad I gave it a chance.

Just watched this last night and I'm curious about everyone's thoughts on the following....

Was it all real, or in Ofelia's head? I originally thought that it was all in her head, with her fantasy world serving as her escape from the harsh realities of her parental situation and the war. But apparently Del Toro has stated that he thinks it's all real, as evidenced by the fact that the labyrinth walls parted for Ofelia and not the captain towards the end of the movie, and that she was able to escape her room by drawing a chalk door on the wall so she could retrieve her brother from the captain's quarters.

But clearly not everything was real, as evidenced by the scene at the end with her talking to the faun who wasn't really there. But then again the mandrake root seemed awfully real. So how much was real and how much wasn't? Del Toro has said that he intends the film to be a kind of Rorschach test for the audience, with each person seeing what they want to see and believing how much they want to believe. But I think it's kind of a cop out to say that some things were real while others weren't. The faun isn't real, but she can make chalk doors in stone walls? Huh?

As for the movie, I liked it but I sure wouldn't compare it to classics like Alice and Wonderland or the Wizard of Oz like a lot of critics have. It also surprised me how much of the movie was rooted in the real world as opposed to Ofelia's fantasies - it was basically a politically-rooted war movie with a fantasy world subtext. Which, oh by the way, didn't really relate to her real world experiences. So, eh. An interesting but flawed film, I guess. The visuals were really amazing though.

Since it was based on fantasy in a real world, I think you have to take what she experienced as "real." She was only able to see the faun, IMO.

Well yeah, but some of her fantasy dealings did have a tangible effect on the real world. Like the chalk door that she used to get out of her room, which Mercedes saw on the wall, and like the labyrinth walls that moved to allow her access to the center of the labyrinth and moved again to block the captain's path.

I think the part at the end was definitely in her head - her liberation from the shackles of her terrible real world environment was ascending a make-believe throne as a princess in a fantasy world, but I'm confused as to how some of the fantasy world affected the real world, and some of it was just pure fantasy.

It'd be like at the end of Lost if they explained some things by real world, plausible science, but then said other things like the smoke monster were totally made-up and magical. Things are either real or they're not....

I disagree.... it's that type of movie that someone may wait to see or it's fallen outside their radar vs. the typical regurged Hollywood crap that e1 talks about. Spoiler cover can't hurt around here, esp. in the TV sections.

Wow you took that a little seriously. I just find it amusing when spoiler tags are used for movies that are out on DVD and have been for a while now. I didn't say don't do it, it was merely amusing that has been around. Not like the Cloverfield thread where people were posting pictures of the monster prior to release.
