Re: What do teachers really make?
I had the same thing at my last job. Had 250 hours of vacation saved up. When I left, they cut me a check for those hours. Unfortunately my new job only allows 5 PTO days to be carried over from year to year.Comment

Re: What do teachers really make?
My job is like that, my sick time/vacation time rolls over year to year. Nice thing...
Anyway, I want to apologize to everyone in this thread, especially Skerik. I came into this thread with the discussion arleady in my head due to my wife's struggles with this profession. Because of that, I took some of it off track, I've dealt with it for 5 years, and watched her cry herself to sleep over not finding a job in this profression that she loves. And I assure you, with her, it's never ONCE been about the money, it's about her complete and total love/passion for the teaching job and making kids smile. She loves it and will always love it. We're going to go through it again this summer when her contract is up, so wish us luck.
But it's always been myself who feels that teachers, nurses, doctor's, cops, firemen, etc are underpaid. The amount of money they make compared to what they do, to me has been extremely underpaid to other jobs. Especially when you live in Ohio and teaching jobs have been cut left and right, you have Cleveland Public Schools letting go over over 700 teachers just 2 years ago due to finances. Stuff like that, just makes you wonder, will she ever find a fulltime job.
So again, everyone, I apologize, I let my emotions take the best of me.
Please carry on, this is a great topic.Comment

Re: What do teachers really make?
My wife works in a great school district in Sugar Land, TX. I would say she is slightly underpaid. In her first year I would say she was grossly underpaid. All the work that goes into your first two or three years is unreal. Once you get a handle on what you are teaching things seem to get a bit easier.
The one thing I don't like about it is that they all get paid the same. Every fourth year teacher in the District gets paid the exact same. The total slackers get paid the same as my wife, who works her but off. The other thing I don't like is that the pay raises aren't steep enough. Here is a link to the FBISD pay scale...
Only $20,000 seperate a first year teacher from a 30 year teacher.Comment

I'd probably have to challenge my students to 360 games of NCAA. You know I would be playing it while they are reading or doing an assignment.Comment

Re: What do teachers really make?
You must consider the standard of living.
In Toronto after ten years of exp teaching your in line to make $83,000 a year. That isn't that much considering how much it costs to live in Toronto.
I'm getting my teacher certification in Maine this year, as of last year starting teachers in Maine make $23,000, which is pennies. Next year its going up to the $30,000 so it does get better as you go on, like anything but its definatley not an 8 hour a day job.Comment
