Favorite Metal/Rock lead singers, and why

On my list I'd have to have

Chris Cornell/Soundgarden/Temple of the Dog/Audioslave - They guy just has amazing range, and pitch

Kurt Cobain/Nirvana - One of the most emotionally charged singers ever IMO, maybe the best

Corey Taylor/Slipknot/Stone Sour - Just love everything he does from melodies to screaming

Layne Staley/Alive In Chains/Mad Season - Very unique singer, another singer where you could just feel it

Eddie Vedder/Pearl Jam/Temple of the Dog - One of the best live performers I've seen

Maynard James Keenan/Tool/A Perfect Circle - Not as talented as Chris Cornell, not as moving as Kurt Cobain, but the man just has something going on that screams ROCK

Brent Smith/Shinedown - A poor mans Chris Cornell IMO, Shinedown is a great newer band, and Brent Smith's voice is why.

Can't disagree with any of those choices.

I'd add Chino Moreno from the deftones for similar reasons to Corey Taylor.

Bradley Nowell of Sublime, just because of the soulfulness in his voice. Guy was great.
      PS: You guys are great.

Interesting topic, should get a wide range of vocalists here.
I would have to say mine would be (in no particular order)
        Ronnie James Dio
        Paul Stanley
        David Coverdale
        Don Dokken
        Tommy Shaw

The reason....well all of these singers have a few things in common.
1-There is no mistaking who they are once you hear them (very important for a singer)
2-They all have the ability to sing the melodic songs as well as belt out the heavier tunes.
3-But (imo) the most important..they can sing the heavier tunes while still keeping the tone in their voice constant. In other words....melodic or heavier....you STILL know who they are.
People are for reviews if it backs their argument, and against them when they don't.
“I believe the game is designed to reward the ones who hit the hardest – If you can’t take it, you shouldn’t play!” Jack Lambert
“Quarterbacks should wear dresses.” Jack Lambert

I love 311...great live band. I would also include Phil Anselmo from Pantera. Those guys had a chemistry that could not be beat.

I know you didn't mean that as a slap in the face, but it is. He doesn't attempt to sing like Cornell, they just have similar tones. Brent is far more comfortable in the lower registers while Chris is more comfortable in the higher registers.

My list would have to include:

                  Brent Smith-Shinedown
                  Patrick Lee Michaelis-Bipolar
                  J Loren-HURT
                  MJK-Tool/APC/Puscifier
Ryan Star-Stage(he is now an acoustic artist)
                  Tom Englund-Evergrey

Because Queen,Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple were definitive masters of the art of hard rock . Almost any hard rock or metal (vocalist) or guitarist if honest, would admit to being influenced by at least one of these artists in some way.

Got a question for you,do you like Bruce's solo projects? I got 3 of his solo CD's and although Maiden isn't there,it's great stuff. Especially "chemical wedding".

Yep that guys voice is amazing. He was made to rock out. He has so many different ranges. Geoff Tate of Queensryche is damn close too with all his ranges. He was is a newer version of Bruce and my opinion! But still Bruce is the best. I am sure some will disagree, but he made songs come alive. Also, if you went to a Maiden concert you where entertain that whole night. I loved it when Eddie came on stage. Yep those were some good times! lol

I second that one. The guy is intense when he's singing, and yet he still has some variety in his singing style

Serj Tankian - System of a Down.

Anyone who's heard this guy's range will know why I put him up here.

This probably doesn't qualify, but Greg Graffin of Bad Religion has a great voice for the style of songs. He has one of the few "distinct" voices in music, where I can know it's Bad Religion by hearing just one second of the song.
