Re: Favorite Metal/Rock lead singers, and why

Chris Cornell - Soundgarden/Audioslave/whatever, He has a certain rasp or something in his voice that sounds nice to me.

    Phil Anselmo - Pantera/Down - Amazing Power.

Steve Perry - Journey - Just Flawless.

    Freddy Mercury - Unique.

I also like David whatever from Disturbed and Chad Grey, and Sully Erna as far as modern stuff goes. I just don't like a lot of what their bands play.

This dude, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rody_Walker , from this band, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protest_the_Hero . That can be heard here, www.purevolume.com/protestthehero

He does a really nice job of mixing metal with punk. Also, he has a surprisingly broad vocal range for singer from this type of band.
I don't like the Yankees, I like the Red Sox, I don't like the Lakers, I like the Celtics, I hate the Canadiens and I love the Bruins. Soccer is the best sport on Earth, but most Americans are too ignorant to realize it. I am American.

        1. Maynard
        2. Mikael Åkerfeldt (opeth)
        3. Chris Cornell
        4. Russell Allen (symphony X)
        5. Howard Jones (killswitch/Blood has been Shed)
        6. Phil Anselmo
        7. Trent Reznor-Trent is the only one I feel I have to give a reason for, as the above dudes are all great singers/musicians. Trent's a pretty bad singer, if you can call him a singer at all, but he's a great "vocalist". He puts all of the right inflection on all of the right parts. He knows he's not a singer, so rather than focusing on singing well, he focuses on making it sound "right", and I think that works out well for the songs.

I'm glad you put the link to this band. I liked this a lot. Some of it reminds me of BtBaM, but in a very good way. Nice stuff.

EDIT: I don't like this. I love this. I've been looking for more heavy progressive bands like this for a while.

Great call on Reznor. He does have great skills at adjusting his voice to the song.

              Thirding Trent Reznor.

A few that I enjoy that haven't been mentioned (I don't think), though not sure if all of these belong in a "best vocalist" category:

-Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World
              -Matt Bellamy of Muse
              -Thom Yorke of Radiohead
-Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace
-Elliott Smith of Elliott Smith and Heatmiser
              -Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters
              -Jesse Lacey of Brand New
              -Ian Watkins of Lostprophets

                        Gotta go with:

                        -Nick Hexum, 311.
                        -Bradley Nowell, Sublime. (RIP)

Neither are really "metal/rock," but they're probably two of my favorite vocalists. They both just have a very soothing, soulful kind of voice that is just very chill and relaxing to listen to.

                        And my two favorite classics:

                        Perry and Don Henley.

Steve Perry -- wish I could have vocals like those two

While I like all those bands, I don't consider any of those lead singers to be exceptional.

                            -Jesse Lacey of Brand New
Kind of the same here. BN is one of my top 5 favorite bands of all time, and I really like Jesse as his lyrics are great and he portrays them very well, but I don't think he's all that great of a singer.

I gotta throw out a duo...

Dallas Green and George Pettit of Alexisonfire.

Green has what I think is, perhaps, the best male voice in all of rock music today, and Pettit really adds some emotion and his screaming voice almost acts as just another instrument. It is an acquired taste, though, and I'm sure some people hate the screaming and stuff... but it might grow on you... it did on me...

Bono of U2 was always one of my favorites too, though he gets a little too eccentric at times.

Geoff Rickley from Thursday is one of my favorite "vocalists," based almost entirely on his emotion and lyrics, but his voice if absolutely terrible.

                            Maynard is excellent as well.
