Do Macs have something super special about them that make them retain their value? A guy on a facebook buy/sell group is selling a 2007 model Macbook with 1gb RAM, 13" screen and only a dual core cpu. Wants $350 for it.

Re: Apple Mac Lovers
That's one of the best things about buying Mac. They hold their value for a long time. Some people are turned off buy them because they can be looked at as "status symbols." Even though some people are ridiculously vain like that, they really are great machines.Originally posted by J. ColeFool me one time that's shame on you. Fool me twice can't put the blame on you. When I went to talk to a guy at an Apple Store during my Easter Weekend back home just to get information I wasn't aware how long they lasted, don't slow down nearly as much as pc's,etc. Seems like a worthy long term investment for the rest of my college life and then into teaching.Saints, LSU, Seminoles, Pelicans, Marlins, LightningComment

Macs are great machines, but they are overpriced for the specs that you receive when compared to their PC counterparts. I have an Intel i5 Mac Mini that I use for development and it runs like a champ. One major positive they have is their build quality. These things are rock solid and well designed.Comment

The reason for this is simple, Apple's case design is flawed. In an effort to make the Macbooks thin and stylish, they've had to pack components that generate a lot of heat into a small, enclosed space. To make matters worse, the vent is too small, and there aren't enough fans. On top of this, the genius design engineers decided to make the CPU and GPU share the same heat sink and place the CPU (processor) right under the GPU (graphics card). Couple that with the fan placement, and this means the heat of the CPU gets blown over the GPU to get to the vent and escape the system. So the processor actually heats up the GPU.
It's really a shame, because aside from this issue, Macs are impeccably designed systems, and while I love Windows 7 on my Asus, Mac OS is even better.
If you do a Google search for "Macbook Pro Overheating" you'll find link after link describing the issue. I'm hoping if it starts happening to my 15" a cooling pad will fix the problem.Comment

And with Macs now using the same internal hardware components as PCs, the salesman was surely talking through is you-know-what.Comment

Re: Apple Mac Lovers
Depends on how you plan on using the machine. I have a 15" Macbook Pro (used for portability, since my 17" Asus gaming laptop is much larger and heavier) and love it. But on that laptop I'm only ever word-processing and web-browsing and occasionally movie watching, since I leave my gaming for the 17".
I know this is the Mac lovers thread, but if all you are going to do is browse facebook and write papers paying twice as much doesn't really make it a better investment. Employers and teachers are going to have MS Office and will want stuff in that format. So even if you get a Mac you are still going to be using MS Office.Comment
