Got my phone around 8:30. Had trouble choosing between the white or black 16GB because the white looked much better than I thought in person. Chose the black and the Att rep took close to an hour trying to figure out how to add to my account. Finished played around w/ the phone and like it alot but its not too different than the iphone 1. 3G is faster but its not blazing fast but better than EDGE which was slow. I heard complaints that the new glossy back was slippery but that isnt the case for me. It actually is stickier than the metal back.
Did they end up letting you get it for the $199 price or did they make you pay full price?

Apple is gonna get skewered in the press for this. They should have (officially) released 2.0 for the first gen iPhones a day or two in advance. According to some people on a number of forums, this is what is causing the problems, not the 3g activations. I'm glad I manually upgraded to 2.0 last night. I would be pissed right now.

Right now on the iPod touch area they've pulled 2.0, so I can't upgrade...Apple will deservedly so get killed for this...How did they not know millions of people wanted this upgrade? Are they dumb? It boggles my mind how they drop the ball this badly.

To be fair, how could Apple really gauge this? This is their first whack into the telecom market. I'm sure their iTunes infrastructure is leveraged to the max as it is.

Um, it's their 2nd iPhone...they saw how popular the first was, how many people have been clamoring for the applications. If that's not enough of an ability to gauge then I don't know what would be...Basically they know how many iPhones are currently out there, and they know all of those will update today when people plug them in, so you have to plan for that.

And if their system can't handle it all at once then release the firmware earlier than the release date of the new phones to lesson the issue...This just doesn't look good and doesn't leave the "Happy Apple Feeling" that most people pride Apple on.

Like mgo said, this is iphone #2. Of the millions of iPhones already out to the public, let's assume 30-50% (probably more) wanted to upgrade to 2.0 today. Apple knows this. So they know they have all these people wanting to upgrade (through iTunes servers) on top of all the new phones they are activating (through iTunes servers). True, Apple couldn't correctly gauge how many 2G iphone users would be upgrading their software, but they could gauge exactly how many activations they would be doing today, they know how many they shipped out, knowing full well that they would sell out. As much of an Apple and iPhone fan as I am, they dropped the ball on this. Bad

For the next week, you're going to be reading articles about how Sally or John had to stand in line for 10 hours due to activation issues and then them not even get a phone. I have a feeling it will be bad and it will require some sort of response from Apple, like the response after the price drop last year.

It's fair to kill them too...Sony screwed up with their PS3 firmware update and caught a ton of flack for it...

Apple's main top selling point is how much easier and user friendly they are compared to Microsoft (Mac vs. PC commercials)...This screw up is essentially Apple acting like a PC. It's like online not working for a game on the first day...yeah, it's hard to test sometimes, but you have to make sure it works and you're ready. You know what's going to happen...

Yeah... remember that link I posted last night? Turns out it was for the 3G iPhone and shouldn't really be used with yours.

I'd officially re-update if you used the link I gave you.

Yup, that's what I'm doing right now. Must be why sometimes I had apps crashing randomly.

And if their system can't handle it all at once then release the firmware earlier than the release date of the new phones to lesson the issue...This just doesn't look good and doesn't leave the "Happy Apple Feeling" that most people pride Apple on.
This maybe their 2nd phone but it's still their first year of this mobile market. Just because they have another product doesn't change the relative infancy.

Secondly, not many companies get supply/demand right in their business infrastructure. It's just impossible to tell how many will want your product at any given time and this comes as NO surprise for an Apple product. Just about everything they bring out new there are snafus somewhere.

They have stepped in a market where there are much more experienced players. Expectations are high right along with the hype. Having more than a year under their belt will surely smooth the growing pains that's are going on here.

Until then people will have to suck it up.

same. It fixed the issues I had.

Oh, we'll definitely have to suck it up and it's fine...I'm just saying that in the consumer's minds it doesn't look good when they spend so much on an iPhone and plan and can't use it...If Microsoft had the same issues they'd be getting slaughtered by everyone here, Apple deserves the same.

They've had iPhone and iPod firmware updates before, they should have anticipated this. They know how many iPhones are currently out there, how many are out for sale, etc...If they don't think it can handle it then roll out some sort of launch. I'd rather wait knowing I have to wait than have this debacle. You think Steve Jobs is happy his company's software issues are on the front page of all the tech blogs?

Hell, at my work we had a huge release with issues, and our customers bitched. They didn't come at us with "Oh, well, it was a big thing, we'll cut you slack"...it was "Why isn't this working right? We want it now". It's the nature of business, if you want to be all "cut them slack, it doesn't work, let's be happy and hug" then the world of business isn't for you.

Plus if we don't voice our displeasure then Apple will bend us over and fark us without lube...look at the price drop, they weren't going to cut anyone a deal until people complained and only THEN did everyone get credit.
