I have friends w/ the 4 and 4s. Both said they didn't feel the need to get a 5 after upgrading software.

Have they used a 5?

The 1 gig ram and faster 4G and LTE speeds alone make it worth it.

Going from a 4 to 5 is about a big of a jump as there was between the original and 4.

I had the 4, and it was getting so slow. Plus, the fact that it doesn't get all the goodies of iOS6, made upgrading to the 5 a no brainer.

Yeah, I honestly think that's a great update... However, the iPhone 4 S to the iPhone 5 is an extremely minimal update

I agree! Still have my 4S but figured I'd give the S3 a try! Nice device so far!

I wouldn't say extremely minimal. There is now LTE in the phone and that alone is worth upgrading from the 4S. Every update won't be a knock out the park, but it's a solid upgrade IMO.

I guess that's my point. For $200-$600, I'm expecting an out of the park upgrade.

I agree with this sentiment. Like the addition of Siri and the improvements under the hood when going from 4 to 4S...

What are you expecting?

Better screen, better camera optics, better wireless capability...

I honestly don't know what some people expect from a phone. It's a phone.

All jokes aside - I'm serious. I see people expecting things from the iPhone that defy logic - like an SD Card or removable battery.

That's not something you're going to get here yet people still expect it.

There are plenty of options on the market. Go with what works for you. Do you buy a Honda Accord then complain it's too slow and doesn't corner well? Do you buy a GT-R then complain you can't fit your new HDTV in the trunk?

Apparently I'm old and grumpy now - seems like people would rather bitch and moan about what things aren't than what they are.

I would say it's extremely telling when people of a different device are always looking back here. If you were that content with what you had, you wouldn't be looking elsewhere.

People get too caught up on specs. In the last year, I have substantially cut back on tech blogs and all that other crap out there speculating because it's just a bunch of people posting what they want in the phone and then when you don't get half the features, then it's a potty upgrade and we never take the time to appreciate what we have.

So I waited it out and I was going to sit this one out but if I figured I will enjoy it, I think it's worth it and I can afford to do it why not? People just talk themselves out of happiness a lot, trying to be like others or basing their wants/needs off what others want and need. I work in IT for a living and I just don't care about the phone specs as long as it performs because I can always get rid of it if I dont like it.
