Similar sentences for murderers hasn't stopped people from killing.

Mix that with the likelihood that most people that drive drunk aren't even aware of their inability to drive, I doubt you'd see less drunk drivers just because they could end up in jail.

They could have locked her up for 23 days or 23 weeks and it wouldn't have stopped her from being out there driving drunk (or otherwise altered) the day she got out. That's our flawed legal system. The only way to stop drunk driving is to eliminate either drinking OR driving.... since neither will EVER happen... we live with the consequences in this society. It's an unfortunate... tragic... saddening... evil fact about a huge segment of the human race. We simply don't care that our actions and decisions put other people in deadly situations.

Well we could always revoke the licenses of those convicted of DUI or DWI and then really get harsh on driving with a revoked license. I agree that there really isn't much that can be done to prevent the behavior itself, but we could sure as hell do a lot more to punish those who break the law.

You're a lawyer or studying to be one, right?

How many people drive without a license? What's the number of 2nd offense DUIs every year? How many people ping pong in and out of the system. The system doesn't work. It is corrupt and incompitent and completely above repair. It's wishful thinking to ever DREAM of a system that works.

Re: Guess who's out of jail?

I should be licensed to practice law within a year from now yes. I could go on Lexis and find the statistics to be precise but I think we can all agree that DUI has a high level of recidivism, or if you don't agree let me assure you it actually does. I agree the system as it exists now is very broken especially when it comes to this crime, that is why I want to see much more stringent penalties than jail time for DUI. Honestly it is one of the laziest crimes out there, how hard is it really to call a cab or use a designated driver. I know in college we always went one of those two routes, and when I say always I mean always.

Maybe I am naive in my youth (not that I'm that young, especially around here), but I honestly believe the system can change. Hell maybe this can lead to some radical response that leads to a change. At the very least when my days as a lawyer are over I very much plan on moving into politics, if the current idiots can't effectuate change then just maybe I can.

THAT is the most pathetic thing of all...

The fact that Paris Hilton is able to exploit the system... is a statement on the system and the people who support it.... not her.
I agree. My outrage is not at Paris Hilton, herself. She's never done anything to adversely affect my life. But this shameless pandering to celebrities that the courts and the law enforcement agencies show needs to stop. Maybe we need a movement to disbar judges that repeatedly issue light sentences to these people.

Genarlow Wilson is in prison for ten years simply receiving oral sex from a 15 year old girl when he was 17. Despite the support from city council, law enforcement, and the public, he has to go through a painful process to get his sentence thrown out. Paris Hilton needs only bat her eyes and have her lawyer file appeals, and she's free after less than 72 hours. I guess Genarlow should have tried to be famous for doing nothing.

Any other person would have had the book thrown at them. Paris Hilton does not provide any service to the community to warrant reduced sentencing. Why is she being given preferencial treatment?
Because she's a celebrity. Seriously it's gonna take Hilton or Lohan to run over someone for something to happen.

And has far has the ankle bracelet. They can be taken off. I remember a guy I grew up with got put on house arrest took his bracelet of and put in on his dog's collar. The only reason they ended up catching on to what happened is the dog dug under the fence and got loose.

Genarlow Wilson isn't the best test case to argue, most of the jury actually believed he was guilty of the rape charge but the way *******es, I mean American juries, actually convict, they went with the middle ground of that charge. A substantially better person to use would be former Vanderbilt commitment Marcus Dixon.

Apparently Hilton was suffering from some medical problem. What that has to do with letting her out early I don't know. I remember when I worked at our county jail,we had a couple of pregnant women in there and they weren't allowed to have an extra mattress or a pillow, let alone be released early.

I doubt she'll be on a strict house arrest anyways...that was probably put in place just to save face and make it look like she has to have some kind of punishment.
