Re: "Dude you HAVE to see this movie!"

Wow, some of y'all got some garbage movies in your top 5.

    Here's mine:

    5. The Goonies - My favorite movie as a child. Most likely my most watched film. The characters work together really well, and it's funny and imaginative. If it had come out this year, I probably wouldn't be thinking the same thing, but growing up it was a classic for me.

    4. The Departed - Probably the best cast of characters in a movie I've ever seen. Plus the ending is badass.

    3. Pulp Fiction - Just a great all-around movie. Really great dialogue, quirky stories, a good mix of action and storytelling, and an awesome soundtrack.

    2. City of God - The best gangster film ever made. It's foreign. Watch it in subtitles. If you're one of those people that can't watch a movie with subtitles... get over it, you're depriving yourself. I've seen it three or four times, and I think it's better than The Godfather, and definitely better than Scarface, Casino, or The Untouchables. It's a different style of movie than the ones I just mentioned, and I think it is more well-done.

    1. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - Saw it about a year or two ago, went into it thinking it was going to be another corny, boring Western. Wrong. Clint Eastwood plays the coolest, most dangerous good-guy I've ever seen in a movie. His short, witty lines, and laid-back demeanor made me want to walk around chewing on straw, squinting at people, and giving them brief, smartass remarks.
Tuco, played by Eli Wallach, is probably my favorite villain of all time. He is absolutely ruthless, will manipulate anyone, but does some really funny stuff throughout the film. He's the perfect character to play alongside Clint Eastwood's.
The soundtrack is the best I've ever heard. The slower moments of the film are improved by the fact that the soundtrack is so good and that these moments actually develop the characters and the story. Also, Sergio Leone is a top 5 director of all time... this being his best and most acclaimed film.

You guys gotta see this one if you haven't yet. It's a man's movie.

Some other movies that I really, really liked but didn't quite make the list:
Aliens, Apocalypse Now, Fight Club, Leon, Memento, Seven, The Usual Suspects, Seven Samurai, No Country For Old Men, Unforgiven, Training Day and Killa Season.

                In no particular order:

Goodfellas - I need a great Deniro/Scorcese picture in my list and this one is my favorite. Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci destroyed this film. Extra props for containing 3/4 of every Sopranos cast member.

Memento - Totally blew me away and is always in rotation around my house. So many different ways to look at it.

Caddyshack - Throw some of the best comedians ever into a golf movie and you have absolute hilarity. Greatest sports movie ever.

Pulp Fiction - I watched this when it first came out - I was 12 - and I think it really messed up my childhood but its an all-time classic. Probably my favorite film ever. I automatically lose respect for people who a) haven't seen it or b) don't like it.

Star Wars Original Trilogy - Gotta have it, made me love movies which is kind of ironic that Episode I made me almost hate movies.

A lot of good movies in this thread including some of my Top 5. I'm going to add some flicks that don't get as much pub as some of the others listed here.

                    1. Red Heat- Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Belushi- before the The Big Lebowski came out it I thought it was the funniest movie ever.

                    2. The Big Kahuna- Danny DeVito, Keven Spacey, Peter Facinelli- Three man movie, really like a stage play, where three guys of three different generations wax philosophical about life. "

                    3. eXistenZ- Jude Law, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Ian Holm-Directed by David Cronenburg. Sci-fi/horror/thriller hybrid, typical Cronenburg craziness.

                    4. Gattaca- Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, Jude Law- Sci-fi film about a period of time where genetic engineering is the dog that wags society's tail.

                    5. Night Falls on Manhattan- Andy Garcia, Ian Holm, James Gandolfini(pre- Sopranos), Richard Dreyfuss.- Drama about the shades of gray of the american legal system.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

Gone Baby Gone - Gonna see it tonight, I have it recorded.

Mystic River - I've heard way too many mixed impressions on this movie. I just won't want to waste two hours on something that I won't like, but I'll look more into it to see if it may be my cup of tea.

Fight Club - Amazing movie, love it to death... but there will always be somebody out there (*cough* my parents) that don't see the directing style as something that is a brilliant aid for the movie.

The Shawshank Redemption - Don't hark on me, but I just only saw this recently (hey, there was a time where you saw it for the first time, right?). Anyway, it easily became a top ten favorite movies of all time for me. Now the only question is whether it's a Blu-ray purchase (two reasons: 1) don't know how good the quality is for a '94 movie, 2) what kind of replay value does this movie have?).

Seven - Another classic, and a must-see. I notice you have a decent liking for Pitt and Freeman, which is terrific, because so do I.

Aside from Gone Baby Gone and Mystic River, these are all definitely must-sees. I'll have to see about GBG later tonight.

And uhh... I guess I'll just throw out The Dark Knight since no one has yet said it, but I think I'm only talking to people that have been living under a rock the past six months.
