You guys might be right, but I think it took him a little while to put 2 + 2 together. The way I looked at it was for whatever reason he knew the Oceanic 6 was going to try to kill him. And I think it happened after Sayid got bandaged up by Ben because the conversation was Sayid saying, but now they know we're looking for them. And Ben was pleased by this.

The cops and other people weren't afraid of Hurley when he was screaming he was a member of the Oceanic 6.

Hopefully we find out more on Thursday.
Actually, I think that's why Hurley was screaming it out. He thought it would strike fear in them. That's my opinion, though. But, perhaps, the cops know nothing about the significance of being a member besides the fact that they survived a horrific crash.

Now, people associated with finding the Island or working for DHARMA, they might fear it because they know what Ben is capable of and they might know that those members might be working for him.

So once Sayid said it, it was confirmation that the guy was in trouble. As a viewer we thought it was Sayid saying, "I happened to survive a horrific crash. But I'm alive." But in reality he was saying it to strike fear into the man. More of a, "I'm one of those people that's now going to kill you."

As for him suggesting that they will now know he's going to kill, that's because the girl phoned her boss. They know that there is at least one member of Oceanic 6 killing people. So they are now aware of his presence. On the golf course, the guy only knew to be aware of the possibility. At least, that's how I took it.

edit: remember, the girl knew Sayid was going to kill her boss. So, I think Sayid killing the man in the golf course was actually their first tip that someone was out there killing. They traced it back to Sayid and were hoping that he could lead them to his boss. Obviously they failed and apparently, Ben doesn't care that they know Sayid is around. Probably because people do stupid things when they are too aware of their surroundings.

I saw this a few days ago but I hadn't seen anyone post it. So here goes.

Don't watch if you haven't seen last week's episode. I think it definitely opens up more questions - maybe that's why the producers cut the scene.

It's not a spoiler if you've seen any of Season Four. It's just another question.

I'm starting to think this show is just a massive conspiracy to get people to read classic literature.

Hmm, after reading the comments it seems people are making sense. It was probably cut because we've already seen in an earlier episode that a light tells you if the fence is on or off.

So there would be no need for Miles to get all parapsychic.

Are you referring to the philosphers and great thinkers referenced in the show?

              That and...

The references to Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass, The Fountainhead, the new girl Charlotte's initials are the same of CS Lewis, and the S is even the same name: Staples, Catch-22, Carrie, Of Mice and Men, The Stand, A Tale of Two Cities, Lord of the Flies, and the Bible.

That's just off the top of my head, but you could also through in philosophers like Hume (Desmond David Hume), John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Stephen Hawking (Ms. Hawking - the old lady from that Desmond episode where he could "alter" his past), Anthony Cooper (Locke's Dad/Tom Sawyer)...

This is just off the top of my head, I'm sure there's far more if you look it up. In all honesty, I think the whole philosophy angle is one of my favorite aspects of the show. I love the whole "Man of Science vs. Man of Faith" theme.

                .
There is also the book Turn of the Screw that has been referenced a few times.

I also bought the book that Sawyer was reading on the beach. It was a manuscript on the show and it was allegedly written by an author that was on the plane and the Losties found the unprinted manuscript. Anyway the book is called "Evil Twin" and it actually had some information in it about Penelope Whidmore and her family and Desmond and his race and Hanso. The book wasn't that great, but it gave some insight into how rich the Whidmore's really are.

One of the extra features on the S3 DVD talks all about the literary references on the show, definitely one of the few "mandatory" extra features people should check out, IMO.

I don't think so because Ana-Lucia's ex-partner asked Hurley if "He thought he was a celebrity or something." But ya never know, they could be infamous like Charles Manson or the Unibomber.

I just read an interview that is going to be in an upcoming Entertainment Weekly with the producers. I'm not going to post the whole thing as that would be against the TOS, but a couple of points I found interesting for people on this board:

(They aren't really spoilers, but I'm using the tags just in case someone doesn't want to know)

Some good answers, but I don't think they are answering quite enough. They only have what 32 episodes left after this season. Hopefully they answer everything they need to.
