Great episode... but I'm trying to wrap my mind around the physical time difference going on.... Feel free to add/edit/correct as necessary.

Ok, so we know that on the island they said it has taken them a day and a half (IIRC) to travel 45 minutes... the number might be slightly off but we should still get a good idea about the time shift.

Day and a half = 36 hours = 2160 minutes.

2160/45 = 48 minutes of time on the island for every minute in real time.

They've been gone roughly 93 days... I think... so:

93 days = 2,232 hours = 133,920 minutes.... on the island....

133,920/48 = 2790 minutes off... or 46.5 hours.... or roughly 2 days in real time.

That's completely awesome.

I think that Dec. 24th 2004 is the present day in the show.

Let's say the "6" get rescued and return home at the end of this season. That would be about the beginning of 2005. The flash forward we saw of Jack & Kate at the end of season 3 will be current present day in the show and in our time. That's my theory.

About the time difference someone was confused about. The helicopter was only gone for a short time (maybe an hour) to those on the copter, but it was 2 days to those on the island. That really means time is moving slower on the island, not faster. They can live what seems to be 2 days on the island in what is really an hour (or so) in real time. That explains why those on the island for a long time do not age much. We know the island is not just behind time to the outside because they can use the radios to talk to each other at the same time. I'm guessing the Losties have not aged much since they crashed there. Ben has aged because he probably keeps going back to the "real" world a lot.

This has to have some affect on what's her names cancer and Locke's legs, but I'm still not sure how. I hope they explain the episode with Locke and Boone where they find the plane and he temporariliy lost the ability to walk.

I was confused so thanks for the theory, it makes sense. I guess I still dont get how this could be since on the island they have a normal day/night progression even though time moves slower.

So the calender in the communications room on the frieghter is correct. The Red Sox winning the World Series comment comes to mind now. In the real world the WS is over, but on island time the baseball playoffs have not even started yet since they are behind.

How does everyone feel about the way they explained Faraday not knowing Desmond when he sees him on the island? I liked it because at least it was an explanation but I can also see others believing that it was convenient.

Here are my impressions from last nights show:

The show has turned the corner. The writers have locked in the explanation of what is happening on the island.

When they re-ran last weeks episode with the pop-up windows, they referenced that the main character in the 2001 movie frequency was Jack Shepard. For thos of you who haven't seen that movie, go do so, its a classic.

Anyway, the whole time travel thing, isn't really time travel, its more like at every interval of time, there is a parralell universe where where life is going on as normal. Its more like your soul or spirit is doing the traveling so when your spirit hops back to 1996, your body in the present sits there unconscious. I would imagine if you do something to alter the events in 1996 to where you couldn't make it back to the place you are in the present at the present time you die because your spirit can't bounce back. So imagine in 1996, you commit murder and are sentneced to prison for life(And you can't escape), you essentially die because the chain of events that brought you to your present location have been permanantly altered. This is why they get the anorism and die.

I am convinced that Ben can control these timewarps to some extent and Miles was giving Ben the code for this with his 3.2 Million request. The code seemed similar to the info that Desmond had to give to Faraday.

Also on last weeks episode with the popups they said that Dharma was still making regular food drops to the island. This MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE. It appears to be a relatively unstable and risky task to come to and leave the island. All communications with Dharma have ceased since the hatches started blowing up. The training video mentioned that if communication ceased, all support would cease as well. So the only possible conclusion that I can come up with is that Ben is an employee of Hanso who funds Dharma and this is part of the master plan. Because Ben has easy contact with the outside world, and unlimited funds it would seem, I don't see how he couldn't be part of Hanso.

Hanso knows about the island and its secrets because the Black Rock log was purchased in 1996. I don't think it was coincidence that Desmond crashed there in his race around the world, factors were put in place for him to get to that island.

Basically at this point, they can do away with the Losties, make the show Desmond, Ben, Hanso centric, wrap up the secrets and keep the Losties as a back story, because I really don't see how they are part of the grand scheme of the story anymore.

Doesn't work for Desmond's time though. He would have been on the island for a long time for 3 years of real time to pass.

365/7.8 days = 46.8 years on island per year off

46.8 years * 3 years = 140.4 years on the island for Desmond

The last scene w. the notebook confused me.

Is it...

A) Faraday knew it said "Desmond Hume is your constant if anything goes wrong" all along and was just looking at it coming full circle.

or

B) You CAN change the future and that sentence was not written in his book originally but appeared there when Desmond altered the future in this episode by contacting Faraday at Oxford. Faraday was looking at it in shock because he doesn't remember writing it.

I'm very happy that the "time travel" appears to be only mentally and not physically, that probably would be a bit too much for me.

Either way it was another great episode. BTW, what's up w. people complaining that this strayed from the storyline? Do people not remember the first season when there were about 25 storylines we bounced around to? Now there's basically three-four and people are complaining about an episode drifting away from the storyline? Eh.

How long does Desmond think he has been missing for? Penny says she has been looking for him for 3 years but does Desmond have any idea of time? I don't recall him ever mentioning it or keeping track of his time.

Desmond basically caused the plane crash by not attending to the numbers right? What if that actually saved the Losties. The crash was real, they somehow survived. But if he goes back and doesn't make the plance crash, could that plane have been destined to crash anyway and was then found at the bottom of the ocean miles away from the island? They probably can't figure out a way to not have the plane crash on the island, but not crash at all. The Losties weren't supposed to come to the island and they have fouled everything up. Just a random WTH thought.

I just realized that this show has been going on since 2004. It will be nearly 4 years, 4 years! Still, we all are left scratching our heads. We've had Russo, the "Others", the tail section survivors, Ben, Juliette, "the supposed rescuers left on the island and on the boat, and we still don't don't what's going on. This frustration has us drawn back each year, and probably bringing in new viewers with their CD box releases. Just an amazing run in TV show history.

Do you think that's why Daniel is crazy in the future? He had Desmond was his constant in his journal.

We haven't seen Daniel in the future. In "Confirmed Dead" that was prior to the Island events.

And if you're referring to Daniel's actions on the Island, just look at the guy before the Island. He was always a bit loony.

What I do think, however, is that Daniel's reaction to watching the footage of the crash (in "Confirmed Dead") was because he knew it had something to do with his theory on time travel.

It's certainly clear after this week that Lost is science fiction. I'm OK with that, but I just remember reading stuff how everything was to be explained based upon events that could happen in real life.

The producers originally said that in an interview. But when the subject came up in Season 3 they claimed they never said it and took it all back.

That's why I'm very worried that they'll go back on their word that this isn't purgatory or that it's not all in someone's head.

But I love that reference to 'Jack Shepard' being the same name as the lead character in the movie Frequency. That is a big clue now that this whole time warp stuff has been revealed.

I think that while it is science fiction, it is not completely unexplainable by science. It is just more cutting edge science and stuff that hasn't been made practicable.
