So someone with an old dish and basic Directv will have to get new equipment in addition to a new plan? Does Directv include new equipment when you upgrade to HD channels like they would for a new customer? Sounds expensive....but I do want HD channels with an HD dvr box set up...

Yes, the HD-DVR can be up to $200 with install, but you can usually get the price to under $100.

I've had DTV for several years now. I can honestly say, there is no way in hell I would ever go back to cable.

Yes, call and ask for customer retention, tell them you want a HR20 but don't want to pay more than 19.99(shipping fee). If they don't do it, either through credits, free stuff, or straight up, hang up and call back later and speak to someone else.

Oh god no. I've been with DTV for almost 10 years now. Been HD for about 1 1/2 years. I love 'em. I gotta say too that their customer service people are fantastic.

i concur. Been a customer for 8 years, and been on the hi-def bandwagon for almost a year, and have never had a problem with DTV. Service and content has been outstanding. During hurricanes, the only thing keeping me from watching it was when the power when out, and once it was on, i had no issues.

It barely ever goes out even when thunderstorms hit the area.

Out of curiosity, has this actually worked for you? This is the one hang up, I refuse to pay 200.00 up front for an HD-DVR, Im ready to make the switch otherwise but this is one thing I wont budge on at all. I may call back later and see what I can find out, working for Best Buy we sometimes get discounts from companies who sell their products in our store, so Im holding out hope this is the case but we will see later when I go to work.

EDIT- I noticed you mentioned customer retention, probably wouldnt work so well for someone who hasnt even signed up for Direct TV as of yet, may give it a shot anyways but not sure the results will be the same.

it works even if you haven't signed up, tell them comcast will give you a free HD-DVR

Well I have tried numerous times today and gotten nowhere, the best I got was an offer to pay 200.00 up front and then get a 10.00 credit for the first 10 months, and to be honest that isnt going to be enough of an incentive to switch. Going from a HD-DVR through Comcast and paying 12.00 a month to 200.00 up front and 9.99 a month on top of that doesnt seem like a good trade, and this entire HD-DVR thing through DirectTV is really annoying to say the least.
