Just curious, but kind of related to Allisson; what would your top 5 female bands/artists be? Can be all-time or past 10 years (or both).

Re: The "Other" Music Thread
Most of the stuff i listen to would fall into this category since its almost all Stoner/Doom metal. Orange Goblin, High on Fire, Jex Thoth, Clutch, etc
Also been obsessed with The Kills lately to. Allison Mosshart's voice is the sex. Really looking forward to the new album later this year.
I'll have to check those other bands out.Comment

Re: The "Other" Music Thread
1. Otep
2. PJ Harvey
3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs
4. The Kills
That's probably really it, I could add the Distillers and Jex Thoth onto that list, but the former have a lot of songs i can do without (not a HUGE fan of punk in general) and the latter only just released an album in the last year/year and a half.HELLO BROOKYLN.

Re: The "Other" Music Thread
Top 5 for me:
1) Neko Case
2) Heartless Bastards
3) Tift Merritt
4) Sleater-Kinney
5) Erykah Badu
*Janelle Monae could potentially be in the top 5 when she releases her sophmore album, which I will be looking forward to. Her debut was brilliant and one of the best debuts I have ever heard.
*Yeah Yeah Yeahs are probably the most disappointing female fronted bands. I loved their first album, but it seemed like with the success of Maps they shook off their punky chainsaw riffs and girl-"rawk" for a more subdued, indie-pop focus. Its Blitz! tried to blend the two styles of the first two albums, but nothing as memorable as Fever To Tell came about.
*Cat Power would be on the list but I'm not sure what is up with her. She hasn't released an original album since like 2005. I love both The Greatest and You Are Free (both for very different reasons, obviously), but its hard to keep her in the top of my current 5 when she hasn't done much recently.
*All-time list probably wouldn't look much different other than subbing in Aretha Franklin and Siousxie and the Banshees.

Re: The "Other" Music Thread
In regard to YYY, its Blitz really didn't do anything for me, but Fever to Tell, Is Is and Show Your Bones come into my rotation at some point every few weeks. I have the same issue with them i have with Kings of Leon in that after the second album (hmmm...) i didn't like the direction the music took.
Also, back to my list I actually like what Brody Dalle has done with Spinnerette. Totally as far away from punk and the Distillers as it can be, but its catchy and always find myself listening to something from the album.
A pretentious friend of mine is trying to get me to listen to Rilo Kiley and Imogen Heap. I keep refusing. Vehemently.HELLO BROOKYLN.

An obscure music thread with no mention of Neutral Milk Hotel? What is the world coming to?
Seriously, if you haven't listened to the album "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" you need to ASAP. It's essentially the holy grail of hipster music.
Here's some other "obscure" recommendations off the top of my head:
-Regina Spektor (by far the best female musician recently imo)
-The Thermals ("Here's Your Future" is a killer song, so is "Now We Can See")
-The Tallest Man on Earth
-Gogol Bordello
-The Features
-The Protomen (essentially a rock opera about Mega Man, if you do decide to check them out I'd recommend reading a summary of each album before listening, otherwise it can be difficult to follow the story)Comment

Re: The "Other" Music Thread
Just noticed this cool thread.
Here are a few bands I really like that aren't well known, some are big overseas though. I've also tried to list songs that are the ones that the band has tried to push or that I just really like in case you want to check them out.
(All of these bands are female fronted)
US:
VersaEmerge - If you like Paramore there is no way you won't like them. Imagine Paramore and Flyleaf having a baby.
- "Fixed at Zero" is their big song
The Letter Black - Wiki lists them as a christian rock band, but even as someone who isn't religious I really like them.
- I think their big song is "Hanging on by a Thread"
Halestorm - They're listed as a metal rock band. I bought their cd off amazon on a whim and have enjoyed it.
- Their big song is "I get off"
UnSun - Metal rock (I guess).
- I'd probably recommend "I ceased"
Kidneythieves - Some form of rock metal. I've only heard a few of their songs but I like what I've heard.
- Check out "Zerospace"
European: (all songs are in english)
Krypteria - They are a symphonic metal band and have become one of my favorite bands.
- So many good songs to recommend, but the first one I heard was "Victorium Speramus"
Within Temptation - I'd probably classify them as symphonic metal too. Lead singer has a very large vocal range, and the band has several different styles of songs.
- Again a lot of good songs, but off the top of my head I'd check out either "Stand my ground" or "Frozen"
Nightwish - I think they're actually somewhat well known here, but they've had two different vocalists. I like both the original and the new one but they are different styles.
- Once again a lot of good songs. Probably check out either "The Islander" or "I wish I had an Angel" (you can find it with either singer)Comment

Re: The "Other" Music Thread
Haven't really tried to get into VersaEmerge (saw them live once though) but I LOVE their cover of "Paint It Black". Her voice goes so well with that song.Originally posted by CardsFan27This is the 3rd time John Calipari has been to his first Final Four! What I'm Currently Listening ToComment

Re: The "Other" Music Thread
So apparently Danger Mouse is producing an album with Jack White and Norah Jones doing vocals. The concept of the album is spaghetti western and Danger Mouse has gotten some of the guys who did the instrumentation for Morricone for the album as well. Its called Rome and I suspect its the next project that will be released with Jack White's involvement. Should be interesting. Two of my favorite people in music teaming up.
