Sports, if your gonna get a PLASMA from CC, I would suggest getting PANASONIC before getting the SAMSUNG. PANASONIC specializes in PLASMA. This is not a knock on SAMSUNG, but when it comes to SAMSUNG it's:

    LCD
    DLP
    PLASMA

The service menu showed 8800 some hours so I got good use out of the old lamp. I could have let it go longer as the biggest issue was with dark scenes where I had trouble seeing much of anything, but I wanted to get the new lamp burnt in a little before the SB.

Anyhow, after changing it my jaw dropped again when looking at the picture. I wasn't aware how dark it really had gotten and how much detail I was missing. So for anyone thinking about changing their lamp, do it. Don't wait until the lamp burns completely out because the picture will likely be too dark by that time.
how do you check the hours on the lamp?

I think it depends on the TV. I have a Samsung DLP (model hlp4663W). On my set you enter the service menu when the TV is off by hitting "Mute, 1, 8, 2, Power". The TV will turn on and the service menu will appear. Go to option 10 and in the bottom right it will show "Lamp Hours: xxxx".

Just in case any one going Sony gets the green blob issue, there was a class-action law suit filed against them and they settled, extending their warranty for another year and offering to replace sets, so if you get this issue they should take care of it.

Thanks Joe...the reviews I had read rated the Samsung as the highest and I liked the way it looked in the store, but I haven't even looked at the Panasonic yet. Actually, after reading this thread I'm not even sure I'm going to go flat screen anymore. It seems that rear projection has made great strides and I am amazed at how much cheaper it is. I'm going to CC tomorrow to take a look at some of the rear projection TV's. So many choices...

But be careful while you're there. Accidentally hitting the wrong button and changing a setting can void your warranty. Just a heads up.

If your still interested here's a review on the PANASONIC 50PX75U. It's a 50' PLASMA with a resolution of 1366x768. The only neg on this set IMO is the lack of a PC Input. Other than that it reviewed very well:

I've had this tv since August. It's incredible.

My brother has a Sony LCD and my brother has a Samsung LCD. Both agree
my plasma has the better picture.

Update: I'm loving my Sony KDS-60A3000! Watching the Super Bowl in HD last night was awesome.
