Sure its being researched, but the closest planet that appears to be habitable is thousands of light years away. I don't see how its going to be possible to colonize other planets and be self sustainable. Sure you could set up colonies on Mars for example as a station, but everything on a planet like Mars would have to be supplied by the earth and that won't solve the population problem. Someone will either have to come up with time travel or teleportation to make colonizing a realistic proposition.
