Good to finally hear that Jackson will be doing more than just producing. Him directing and co-writing makes these as must-see as the LOTR trilogy for me.

Re: The Hobbit - Peter Jackson produced prequel to Lord of the Rings
Peter Jackson on the set of The Hobbit, which begins filming today (May 21 in New Zealand).
Start of Production press release:
PRODUCTION BEGINS IN NEW ZEALAND ON THE HOBBIT, PETER JACKSON’S TWO FILM **** ADAPTATION OF J.R.R. TOLKIEN’S TIMELESS CLASSIC
In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit…
Wellington, NZ, March 21, 2011—Production has commenced in Wellington, New Zealand, on “The Hobbit,” filmmaker Peter Jackson’s two film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s widely read masterpiece.
“The Hobbit” is set in Middle-earth 60 years before Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”
The two films, with screenplays by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson, will be shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. Filming will take place at Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.
“The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an **** quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakensheild. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.
Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever … Gollum.
Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.
Martin Freeman takes the title role as Bilbo Baggins and Ian McKellen returns in the role of Gandalf the Grey. The Dwarves are played by Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield), Ken Stott (Balin), Graham McTavish (Dwalin), William Kircher (Bifur) James Nesbitt (Bofur), Stephen Hunter (Bombur), Rob Kazinsky (Fili), Aidan Turner (Kili), Peter Hambleton (Gloin), John Callen (Oin), Jed Brophy (Nori), Mark Hadlow (Dori) and Adam Brown (Ori). Reprising their roles from “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy are Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Andy Serkis as Gollum and Elijah Wood as Frodo. Jeffrey Thomas and Mike Mizrahi also join the cast as Dwarf Kings Thror and Thrain, respectively. Further casting announcements are expected.Last edited by CMH; 03-20-2011, 07:10 PM."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Re: The Hobbit - Peter Jackson produced prequel to Lord of the Rings
James Cameron has a huge influence on the production value of The Hobbit.
The man helped make 3D a new industry standard by getting cinemas to switch out to 3D ready screens. Now, Cameron is trying to get the entire industry to film movies in frames greater than the film standard 24 fps.
The technical jargon explaining this can be easy, but confusing for those that only look at fps as speed rather than frames. Cameron ran tests showing screen tests at 48 and 60 fps and the result is a lot smoother movement, less of the strobing effect, which gives the impression of an enhanced resolution.
Cameron said: “If watching a 3D movie is like looking through a window, then [with this] we’ve taken the glass out of the window and we’re staring at reality.”
What does this have to do with The Hobbit?
Well, in order to display film at those enhanced fps (which home televisions can already do), cinemas will have to bump the resolution of screen projectors to 4K from the 2K (even more at 1K) at the present moment.
The Hobbit is on course to be the first film to shoot at 48 fps and have the potential to render out in full 4K. Whether the studio will do so will depend on cinemas upgrading their software to accommodate the improved look.
Even if the film does not release in full 4K, it will be able to show most of its true beauty at home because home televisions already possess the ability to process at higher than 24 fps.
In other words: at least until Avatar 2 is released, The Hobbit may end up being the most beautiful film you've ever seen."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Can't wait for this. I loved the LOTR movies and have read all the books and I always thought The Hobbit would have made as good if not a better movie than the others so I hope they do it justice.Comment
