Full Metal Jacket
I just watched this last night on HD-DVD and it was, regretably, the first time I had seen the movie all the way through. Amazing movie. The first half was intense and just crazy. There is something about the way Stanley Kubrick can capture the essence of a character in the eyes, including the character's transformation from perfectly normal to all out psychotic.

Re: Full Metal Jacket
To anyone looking to join the military I would say the first part is a pretty accurate depiction of bootcamp. The only differences is that the MTIs can no longer touch a recruit without permission (at least in 1996). -

Really enjoy this movie, though I usually only watch the first half.Comment

Incredible movie.
Arguably the 2nd best war movie ever.
Apocalypse Now owns all.Comment

Re: Full Metal Jacket
Great movie for those who still haven't seen it.
The funny thing is, I can't see Vincent D'Onofrio in anything else without seeing him as Pyle....he has been permanently typecast for me.Comment

Re: Full Metal Jacket
My father said it was extremely accurate to his experience, right up until Private Pyle was in the Bathroom....no way a drill sergeant is going to confront an obviously deranged Pyle (and it is extremely unlikely that live ammo would have made it off the range as well).
Great movie for those who still haven't seen it.

A couple of things: Ammo can easily make it off the range and the DI confronting Pyle probably took that approach because he thought he had him mentally dominated. His approach was believable.Comment

Re: Full Metal Jacket
I have no military experience, but I am under the impression that they literally count every cartridge to make sure nothing is leaving....although I'm also sure there are other ways to get it.Comment

Re: Full Metal Jacket
I won't get too deep into it here, but the ranges are used by more than just recruits. I've found countless amounts of live rounds left behind from other training events (night fires, requalification, etc). You can easily find a few and put them in one of the many pockets you have. You simply make a declaration of not having any brass/live ammo and they don't search you when you leave for the day.Comment

Re: Full Metal Jacket
I liked Platoon better than Full Metal Jacket, but both are great movies."Maybe I can't win. But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he's got to be willing to die himself. I don't know if he's ready to do that."Comment
