How can anyone not like this movie? It's a classic.Cost of Super Bowl XLII ticket -$750
Trip from NYC to Glendale, Arizona -$650
Vintage Eli Manning jersey -$230
Picturing the faces of Chargers' fans and certain studio analysts as they watch Eli play in the Super Bowl XLII from their respective homes, or for some - a television studio - Priceless. -
Re: Full Metal Jacket
I love Full Metal Jacket but as many of you have stated it seems like two movies combined into one. The first half and the second half really are both very good but to me it seems like the movie taken as a whole feels like they don't mesh well. I also agree that I usually just watch the first half as it is clearly the better half.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: Full Metal Jacket
I also favor the first half of the movie, but as an overall war experience I like We Were Soldiers more.
We also had a kid named John Lennon in basic who pretty much was a mark from the beginning just because of his name. The kid also came to basic with shoulder length hair, which was a very stupid thing to do. He lasted about a week and a half before he was booted for being a screw up. There was another kid named Reynolds who looked like Uncle Fester after his head was shaved, and the first time we got mail the TI said, "Let me guess this must be from Morticia." The one and only time I lost my military bearing during my time in basic.
I would love to see a movie encompass the entire 12 weeks of basic training from zero week to graduation. One thing I really like about basic was Taps being the last thing you heard before going to bed.Comment

Re: Full Metal Jacket
EVERYbody loves the 1st half of Full Metal Jacket, but if you are a Kubrick fan, the 2nd half follows up on his "dehumanization" theme that was set up in the 1st half. A very standard theme in Kubrick films, and he nails it here.NCAA: Michigan Wolverines

Re: Full Metal Jacket
I'm not sure if you're going to get the same effect of SPR on the small screen. It's just that in that last battle scene when the tank comes busting over top of them and it's larger than life.....I just remember, at the time in my theatre seat thinking, "you've got to be f***ing kidding me!" I also remember walking away from that movie thinking I didn't have anything to complain about ever again.....unless, of course, I find myself looking for my arm on the ground somewhere!Comment

There was this one guy who was so shook by the drills, he thought his name actually was Joe Snuffy. First mail call the drill calls out "Well well well, who's Pvt. Joe Snuffy this time?" I guess it happens a lot. He had to tell us who the letter was from to find out who it was supposed to go to. I don't know what was funnier, that the guy thought he was now Joe Snuffy or that his parents addressed him as such in their return letter.PS: You guys are great.

Re: Full Metal Jacket
Sorry for the Double post.
Classic! I swear to be a MTI you MUST attend a class to be a comedian, because they sure are some funny mofos. In basic EVERYONE is religious, as it gets you out of the dorm for a couple hours. The other thing I couldn't get over was everyone else sucking on those vitamin-c drops as a substitute for candy.Comment

There was a little poster on the wall showing an example of how we should address our envelopes so our families could write to us. The example was something like:

Re: Full Metal Jacket
Agreed 100%. I liked the reflected evolution of Pyle and then Joker in the first and second half, respectively. And if its just one thing Kubrick did perfectly, was capturing the essence of the character with just their eyes.
