Agree, felt the second half was a big letdown, what a tough act to follow. But all in all a classic.

Well, with Matthew Modine in the mix.....there's only so much theatrical covering up you can do by the other actors!

        Re: Full Metal Jacket

We had out version of Private Pyle when I was in basic, I'm sure each class has its own. This dude was a total **** up. I remember we were at the range zeroing our weapons and he took all day. One of the drill sergeants said something to him and he turned around (not thinking) with the rifle (M16-A2) turning as well. He got the **** beat out of him that day. I think it was about 3 drills on him. A short time after that he made some comments about killing the drill, and it got back to our DS. I don't know if they kicked him out, or put him in another company (get a lot of different news with stuff like that, never an official word though) but he didn't leave Ft. Knox with us.

Amyways, great movie, I enjoyed the whole thing.

you've seen the best part.... other than the quotable line of that decade: "I love you long time."

Personally, it's one of the most overrated movies ever made.

The first half of the movie is entertaining, the 2nd half takes a nap.

                  Again, only my opinion.

I think that Private Ryan suffers from the same fate FMJ does. Terrific opening, then the rest of the film is a let down.

My favorite's would go something like this.
                    A Thin Red Line
                    Patton
                    Glory
                    Platoon
Band of Brothers (TV series, but what a TV series. EPIC)
                    M*A*S*H

Honorable mention - Lawrence of Arabia, Paths of Glory, The Bridge On the River Kwai, The Pianist, Full Metal Jacket( First half anyway), Zulu, The Deer Hunter, Hamburger Hill, All Quiet on the Western Front.

                    Then maybe Saving Private Ryan

The first half is, by far, the most accurate depiction of Marine Corps boot camp you will ever see. Period.

The second half, at least to me, is just as good. Kubrick does an outstanding job of delivering on just how screwed up of a situation we were in.

Can't see that. The battle near the end of SPR was almost surreal on the big screen. Interestingly you mentino BOB which was basically an offshoot of SPR.

                          ..and MASH? Different genre.

I beg to differ. A war movie to be sure just a different type that's all.

I fell asleep watching it, usually a sure sign of an less than average film, although if you recommend it enough, maybe I'll give it another shot.
