    Life on Mars (TV Show)

If you haven't watched this, it's one of the best shows I've ever seen.

It's on BBC America, but I don't know when. It's also out on DVD. There are only 16 episodes so it's really not that long. (You can always find it through other means.)

Basically, it's about a cop who's chasing down a serial killer that gets hit by a car. He wakes up in 1973 but doesn't know if he's gone crazy, gone back in time, in a coma or what. His name is Sam Tyler who gets transferred from London to Manchester as a detective.

You would think something like this would be stupid but it's brilliantly written and has one of the most memorable TV characters as in DCI Gene Hunt. It's like if Archie from All in the Family was a chief detective, sprinkled in with Starsky and Hutch.

There's a few English sayings that will go over most people's head, (including mine) but all-in-all you will understand the joke.

Oh ya and it has one of the best TV soundtracks around if you are a fan of 70s Rock. Even if you aren't it's still pretty good.

BBC has also started to air the sequel in Ashes to Ashes. I won't say too much as it will give away what happens in Life on Mars. (Don't know when BBC America will start showing it.)

And it looks like David E. Kelly is remaking this version. But I hate David E. Kelly's shows so it might suck. It doesn't even look faithful to the BBC version.

It's a bit different but probably one of best shows on TV.

I'll probably start watching the American version first, which premieres this Thursday on ABC. The fact that Michael Imperoli and Harvey Keitel star in this one has my interest, although the main character of Sam Tyler will be played by Irish actor Jason O'Mara. Interesting that the lead character is from the UK, assuming his original accent is involved.
The American version underwent a massive overhaul involving character, actors and overall format:
" In accordance with the script changes and with permission of the original creators, the "unsatisfying" ambiguity of Sam's story was removed in favor of a "mythological element" and "deeper mystery".
Not sure what the "unsatisfying ambiguity" of Sam's story was. As JRod stated the BBC version has Sam Tyler not knowing if he has gone crazy, in a coma, or actually traveled back in time.

I'll be watching the American version first as well. If I find it interesting i'll definitely check out the English version. The ads i've seen for the show have caught my interest.

What did you guys think of it last night?

If they don't stray far from last night's premiere this is at the top of my list (until Lost starts). It was brilliant.

Looks like it got pretty good ratings for the Thursday 10pm slot as well (won the time slot).

I was very impressed. Not one slow moment. Great 70's environment. The 70's more brute force(ultra personified by top cop Keitel), sexist, technology starved cop force is a good angle in itself.

Love it! I was made in the 70's so maybe it's in my DNA.

I'd love to get into the new version but the *******s put it on Thursday night.

I already watch more on Thursdays than my DVR can handle. I dont have room for another show.

You must not be able to record two shows at one time. I record Smallville, The Office, Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Life On Mars on Thursday with no problem.

Sadly I missed the premiere episode

Is it easy to pick up because I intend to watch this series. If not then can someone please fill me in so that I won't be completely lost next Thursday.

Easy to pick up. The first episode deals with his disorientation at having lost his mind or actually time traveled, cavemen cops who use excessive force and treat female cops like secretaries, and a 1973-2008 connection explained in the spoiler area.
                              Spoiler

Hope this helps SPTO and definitely watch the next show.
