Re: Anime/Manga Discussion Thread
Okay, so Higurashi...
It has many elements of those two shows that you named, Elfen Lied and Death Note. Very psychological mystery type of anime, you'll be trying to figure out just what the hell is going on right along with the characters (one in particular), through most of it. Also drops into the horror genre quite a bit, as it gets quite bloody when things go wrong (and oh boy, do they ever!). If you weren't squeamish over Elfen Lied, you shouldn't have any problem with it though (some of Lied's scenes still make me wince).
One word of caution though - I know you said you don't like annoying characters, and Higurashi's can be that at times when they're acting normal (you could mistake it for slice-of-life at times). But it really serves to contrast when they go off-the-wall bat**** crazy, and I think the effect works really well. The whole anime is defined by those types of mood swings.
It has two normal seasons of 26 and 24 episodes, with a third season being an OVA of sorts.
Thanks for the tips, I just started watching Ghost in the Shell, and I'll try to find cowboy bebop and higurashi online since they aren't on netflix. Here's hopingI always suggest Cowboy Bebop to people newer to anime. Only a season's worth of episodes and its considered one of the best ones (generally). Not as complex as Death note though i'll definitely tell you that.
you really want to get philosophical go with Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex seasons. There's two, 1st complex and 2nd gig. each about 23 episodes.

Re: Anime/Manga Discussion Thread
Funimation swinging the dick.....does the industry really need this right now?
Funimation Sues A.D. Vision, Sentai, Others for US$8 Million
I'm concerned because Sentai is a major provider of Anime Network's streams (of which I've been a member of for a while now)...
Edit: Hmm, that wasn't filtered...Ooookay.

Re: Anime/Manga Discussion Thread
They are essentially no different from comic books. Just read from right to left instead of left to right. They are divided into 4 age groups.
Shounen (What she's probably reading) is for boys (really anyone though) aged 8 - 17. Usually involves such categories like Martial Arts and Sports. Dragonball Z, and Naruto would be perfect examples.
Shoujo is for girls aged 8-17 and generally involves such genre of manga like Romance or Slice of Life (generally a manga about people and their everyday lives) Fruits Basket would be an example.
Seinen is for boys/men aged 18+ and is usually more risque and gory, but generally carries the same categories as Shounen, just more mature. Characters die when they should mainly. Usually have terrible endings. An example would be the manga Basilisk or Vagabond.
Josei is for girls/women aged 18+ and you know all those romance stories? Yeah, they get darker and the male characters become less effeminate. Haven't read any in this category yet, just going off of hearsay from a friend. Though it seems like the popular manga Nana is apart of this category as well.
To learn more about the different types of manga try going to the website mangareader.net and go to the advance search tab. It'll show you ALL of the different categories in manga and has a fairly wide collection.Comment

Yeah, I'm way behind since Vita came out. I really want to watch Fate Zero and Another, but just haven't been able to find the time. And with baseball season starting and the Blues making a playoff run it's not likely to change anytime soon.
