New Universal Remote - Harmony One - my quick review

This is my quick review of Harmony's new universal remote, the Harmony One, MSRP $250

So I needed a new universal remote, my HTM-MX500 was not really accomplishing what I needed it to do. I hated having to scroll through my inputs on my TV whenever I wanted to change what I was watching, and the wife was getting frustrated. Plus it was damaged from when I threw it last year after a Louisville bball game.

I don't really have that many components to control, here is my list of equipment:

    TV - JVC LT32X667 32" HDTV
    A/V - Marantz SR4600
    DirecTV - HR20 HD DVR
    Sony PS3

I read about how easy it was to set up, just plug it into your computer, enter the models of the equipment you have, and you're off and running.

Well, it wasn't that easy for me, not really sure if I have "off the wall" devices or what, but it just wasn't that simple.

Initial setup is fairly straightforward, install the CD on your computer that came with it, create an account with Logitech, connect the remote via USB and you're ready to go. Keep in mind that you have to have your computer connected to the internet to program the remote because it downloads all the commands from the internet.

I went through my list of entering all my models and answering simple questions such as what component do you want controlling the volume while watching TV? Naturally, if you have an A/V receiver, that is what you select. After running through the setup and updating the remote, I hit the Watch TV button on the touchscreen LCD and it turned my components on, although everything wasn't set correctly. It then has this nifty help feature built into the LCD that asks you if everything is correct. I pushed no because it wasn't and it asked me specific questions, such as "Is the TV on the correct input", "is the A/V receiver on", and so forth. After answering a couple of the questions it automatically changed everything to the correct input except for the receiver would never change to the correct input I specified in the setup portion.

So I connected it back to the computer and had to manually learn the command for the input I was using on my receiver. Not that big of a deal, but a pain in the *** nonetheless. Tried it again, and voila, set up perfect. While watching TV you can set up Favorite channels to display as well. The great thing about these is that you can add the specific icons for the channels you want. Want to change to ESPN HD, just hit the ESPN HD logo on the LCD Screen. You can add up to 4 pages of favorites for a total of 24 channels.

Next up, the PS3. I knew the remote would not control the PS3 directly because the PS3 uses bluetooth technology and this remote uses IR, but I still wanted it to go directly to the correct input on the TV without me having to scroll through the input 6 times to get to Digital 2. So I hit Play PS3 button (The activities are all customizable as well) and sure enough it went straight to correct input on my TV and switched to the DVD input on my receiver. Switched back to Watch TV and it worked like a champ. No need to set up complicated macros anymore.

I set up the same activity for my Wii as well and sure enough worked perfect.

So in conclusion after the initial speed bump I had with the setup it's a terrific remote, accomplishing everything I need, including keeping the wife happy. Although it's a tad on the expensive side, it works great.

Check out the Nyko BluWave Remote...aukevin and I have it, and it is a USB adapter for the PS3 that lets you do everything except turn it on/off. You can program the Harmony remotes with the rest and it's pretty cool. I have learned to deal with turning off and on by hand or whatever, but I just like using my main Harmony to fast forward, control the menus, etc.

Great review and I'm a big fan of Harmony remotes now. It's great to hit one button and have everything magically switch to the different option. Totally girlfriend-proof lol.

Funny you say that, I just ordered the Nyko remote from Amazon about 5 minutes ago. Using the PS3 controller for DVD sucks.

Sounds like it has some cool features, but $250 for a remote? Dayum!

There are more cheaper Harmony's out there.

I got this one Harmony 880 from Amazon for cheaper then what it's at now...It'll last me years and it's so nice to hit one button instead of having 5 remotes. Let alone explaining to a girlfriend that to watch a DVD on the PS3 you have to change the reciever to "CD" input, etc...

Nice writeup Paul. I have the HTM-MX500 and while I like it, I do agree that scrolling through so many inputs is a headache. Plus, my fiance is always calling me when I'm not home to say she messed something up (ie: she presses a macro to go from DVD to HDTV and didn't hold the remote towards the TV long enough so the TV didn't stop on the correct input).

I've been considering getting another remote for a long time now. I'm definitely going to keep this one in mind.

The "Help" button is great...it asks you if the TV is on, then if it's on the right input, etc...goes through every conceivable problem. I think it's probably more evolved in Paul's, but it's still nice on mine. I had trouble pulling the trigger on an expensive remote, but after I did I wondered why I hadn't a long time ago.

That was my big problem. I HATED scrolling through 6 inputs to get to the one I wanted on the TV. It literally took about 20 seconds to do that and was so annoying. I thought my TV had discrete inputs but honestly I didn't really feel like scouring the internet trying to find them and then get them integrated into the MX-500. I was actually going to take the One back if it didn't work flawlessly, but it does after some tinkering.

Glad you like it. I have the 880 and have no complaints except the charging station, sometimes the contacts don't line up. The charging station for the One looks better, actually I like the whole sleak design of the One better. Nice.

Candy if you could stay away from the 670. I'm on my 2nd 670 & this-1 has been giving me problems also. The LCD Screen just decides to act-up when ever it feels like-it. I would suggest the 550 if your looking not to spend a lot of $. I have the 550 as a bedroom remote for over a year now without 1 problem.

As for the Harmony-1 is was real close to buying it on Saturday, but the wife wouldn't let me....

I have been thinking about getting a Harmony. Can you "personalize" buttons on the remote though?

For example, I have an Aspect Ratio button on my TV remote that I would like to use while watching TV on my DVR...Can you set up custom buttons if the Universal remote does not have an "Aspect Ratio" command built in?

Sorry if that doesnt make sense!
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

yeah, I have the + button (the one to the left of the 0 button) always set to change the aspect of my TV no matter what activity I am doing (watching TV, playing games, DVD, etc).
