Re: New Universal Remote - Harmony One - my quick review

My Harmony One is jacked up. I connected it to my PC to see if there were any firmware updates. well it updated something and now it won't control my inputs on my TV correctly. Logitech support sucks too by the way. I can't figure out how to get my remote back to the way it was.

Re: New Universal Remote - Harmony One - my quick review

After trying to get my 659 working most of the morning, I think I'm going to take it back. It works great if you're just watching bluray or watching the Dish, but I can't get it to work with my DVD recorder properly (I guess hoping I could control both the Dish channels and the recording part of the DVD-R at the same time on the remote was a bit of a stretch) and it obviously won't do anything with the Wii other than set the input. It also won't turn off and on my CD player because the remote for that has no power buttons either. Almost $100 seems like a lot just turn off and on my dish, bluray and tv when I have that down to a science with the current remotes anyway.

Casey, do you want the record button to work for your DVD while everything else controlls the Dish?

Well, I want to be able, when I push the button for "record", to have the the tv go to the DVD-R input with the Dish showing on screen, and then be able to change channels with the remote and also press record and have it control the recording of the DVD-R, not the Dish DVR. Does that make sense? Right now, when I'm recording something from Dish onto a DVD, I have both remotes in hand. With the Dish remote I find the DVR event I want to record and hit play. With the DVD-R remote, I hit record and then at the end I go through this naming and finalizing step. I kept trying different things with the harmony software and nothing seemed to be able to control two different devices at the same time with one remote.

Mine does events where there are multiple things being done. When I hit "360" it changes my TV to VGA, changes my reciever to whatever setting is needed, and then turns on the 360. I'm sure there's gotta be a way to hit a button and do a series of commands for multiple devices. I'd check the forum Heel mentioned, they might be more hardcore than we are and know the answer. You are doing something kinda confusing/complicated too (I'm still not really clear on it myself, perhaps why I don't have an answer as well).

Worst case couldn't you manually just switch between devices on the Harmony, so you don't have to have 2 remotes out? It wouldn't be recorded and one button press, but it's something?

Yeah...I don't quite understand the setup or what he meant.

Maybe list how everything's set when watching tv, and then what exactly needs to happen to record at that moment?

Re: New Universal Remote - Harmony One - my quick review

Yes. I have movies that I've recorded onto the DVR. From there, I record them on my DVD recorder (there are a lot of movies that I like that show up on Dish, but I don't like them enough to go buy the DVD). Here's what I do:

                    1. Turn on the DVD recorder and put a blank disk in. It reads it and then is ready to go.
                    2. At this point, I usually have the input on HDMI1 (the Dish input). Since it's on that input, I can see the Dish menu and choose which movie I want to record. I pick it from the list and hit play.
                    3. On the DVD Recorder remote, I then hit the record button and it records the movie. Since the input is still HDMI1, I'm able to get the digital optical sound, etc. that the Dish normally has and watch the movie while I'm recording it.
                    4. At the end of the movie, I hit stop on the DVD Recorder remote. At that point, I have to switch over to Component2 (The recorder's input) because I have to be able to see a setup screen for the DVD recorder. I then press a setup button the DVD Recorder remote and there is a screen where I name the disk and "Finalize" it. This finalize option makes it playable in DVD units.

Hopefully that explained it better. I was hoping to be able to do that two remote process through the one remote, but I don't see how I can press play for the Dish program while I'm also pressing record for the recorder at the same time, on the same "program" (The harmony calls watching tv a program and recording a program).

That was better...but I'm not much more help. I've got an 880 and the screen's a lot different with more options. I've just got to think it's possible to manually set a certain button to do a sequence of button presses, ie. First hit play on DVR, then hit record on DVD. I just don't know how...

I have a similar setup in our living room. What I did was to run another connection from your dish network receivers "OUT" to the DVD Recorders "IN" and then from DVD Recorder "OUT" to the back of the tv. This is something extra, you would leave everything else like it is.

Then I created an activity on the harmony web page and named it "Record To DVD". YOu set it up so when you press "REcord to DVD" that it turns on the DVD Player and Dish Receiver and have it go to the input on the back of your tv (the input you used doing the steps above).

Sounds confusing but it's pretty easy. If you want to try what I said above, i can tell you what to do after that. you can have it set up so when you press "Play" it starts the DVR and when you press "Record" it starts recording on the DVD recorder.

And this 659 should be able to do that? I know you have that newer model. Thanks for the info though. I will give that a try.

edit: Actually, I already have it set up that way. I have composite cables going into the DVR Recorder from the Dish box. I have component cables going out from the DVD Recorder to the TV already. That is input labeled Component2. That's what I have set up in the activity on the Harmony setup. The software just doesn't give me much in the way of options once I'm in the activity unless I'm not looking somewhere I'm supposed to. Every time I choose that activity, it basically has the DVD Recorder remote take over. That doesn't work because I have to be able to pick and play something off the DVR at the same time.

Edit #2: I think I may be figuring this out. I think I can have it on the Activity called "Watch TV" and then just press the Media button and choose "Record DVD" and set up a button for record. Heel, does that sound right?

Edit #3: I don't think that's going to work. I've figured out how to get buttons to do what I want, but the problem is that I can't do more than one "activity" at a time and I don't know how to (if there's a way) set up a command for one device to use while I'm controlling another. For example, if I'm on the "watch tv" activity, I can change the device on the remote over to the DVD Recorder, but then I can't control the starting and stopping of the DVR show until I switch back. Makes it impossible to time the start of the show with the start of the recording. Heel, do you know if there's a way to add a command for a different device to the activity of another?

Edit #4: Ok, I figured out how to run commands for the DVD recorder while I'm on the watch tv activity. The only thing I have to figure out now is how to change the input source during an activity. If I can do that, I can switch over to the DVD Recorder screen and do the naming and finalizing of the disk and then switch back over to the DVD. Almost there...lol

Edit #5: Ok, I figured out how to add input source changes to the menu too, so I can get over to the Recorder to do those final steps. Problem now is that the up and down arrows don't follow the source, so when I hit up and down, instead of going up and down in the recorder menu, it changes channels as if it were still on the other source.

couple aways around this. First, you can just choose "Devices" on your remote and select the DVD recorder and you will be able to control the dvd recorder.

Or for this activity, you can take the left and right arrows on the remote (or any other two buttons) and change these so when you press them, they control the up and down on the dvd recorder. Does that make sense?

Yeah, it makes sense. It works doing that, but controlling directions with 4 buttons on the display is a pain in the butt. Also, I have the activity set to turn on and off the DVD Recorder, but half the time it doesn't work. I have to use the help button to do it.

Edit: LOL. After all that (I got the turn off/on thing working), I just found out that the Universal doesn't even work when I'm sitting on my couch. I have to be within 3 or 4 feet of the Dish box for it to recognize commands. Is there a setting somewhere?
