    Armageddon (Satellite Kill Shot)

I've been following this story for a few weeks and have not seen it posted here. Doesn't this seem like something out of a disaster movie like Armageddon or Deep Impact, using rockets to shoot down asteroids or hazardous material before it enters earths atmosphere?-

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/space/0...own/index.html

Lol, there is only a 10 second window for them to fire the missile and they only have 10 days to do (100 seconds total) so before the satellite hits the earth, and the conditions have to be perfect. No pressure!

Oh crap this is in non sports gaming, could someone please move it to the entertainment and technology forum. Thanks.

Sounds like a job for Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck.

        Re: Armageddon (Satellite Kill Shot)

With Armageddon and Deep Impact the problem wasn't hitting the asteroid/meteorite, it was hitting it with enough power to actually cause a seriously massive object to change course to a orbit that no longer intersects the Earth.

The satellite takeout is relatively much more simple. The Aegis missile systems on the cruisers have been around for a little while, intended to shoot down ICBM's. I'm pretty sure we've had a bunch of successful tests, but obviously no one's seriously lobbed a ICBM at us. The satellite is moving on a pretty known course, speed, etc so the Aegis's computers (and other computers) can plan a bit more than the 2 minutes we'd have if North Korea or someone lobbed a missile at us.

I'm still not 100% this will work, because the whole concept does leave very little room for error (you have such a short window to detonate your missile next to the satellite). That's been the problem in the past with missile defense systems, getting the aim and timing exactly perfect ALL the time.

It'll be very interesting to see how this works out, but thankfully it's not quite like a massive asteroid is coming at us.

I'm pretty confident that they'll be able to intercept the satellite. The US has proven to be able to intercept a missile with another missile, so hopefully the system can intercept this. What I find amusing is that some officials are more concerned with who picks up the pieces of the spy satellite.

Conspiracy Theory: Is the US using this to test their missile defense system ? Other countries seem to think so.

So which area exactly is likely to be hit with this debris if the US is unsuccessful?

Yeah, Russia seems to be the lead ones saying this. This does give the US a good opportunity to test it with worldwide attention, but I don't know.

I don't really buy it myself. (the theory being that the story of the satellite going bad is faked and such)

I dunno, being hit by a CIA spy sat is prolly better than winning the power ball.

I look at it this way.

A satellite has malufunctioned and it's falling to Earth. The government may not have caused it, but they are salivating at the mouth to finally get to show off their missle defense system; something which normally would be considered a threat to global security.

It reminds me of 9/11. The government may not have been involved (who knows at this point; wouldn't surprise me if they were), but I bet they [Bush and co.] felt like they just won the lottery when they learned they could further increase their power by using the fear of terrorism.
