Re: Are College Campuses Really Safer Now?
Man this thread is off topic like a mother...... well its hard to make a campus safe becasue campuses are like mini cities and you cant police it like high schools. You can use metal detectors in main buildings and increase campus police presence but its still hard to stop attacks like we have had in the past 2 years....Schools have started using broadcast system using text messages and emails to alert students to issues that may come up but you will need to work on prevention and reaction by students to really help
Prevention of people slipping through the cracks better mental health response...
Emergency preparedness training for the facuilty and staff...
Offer students the classes on how to handle situations like this...Comment

Re: Are College Campuses Really Safer Now?
Throwing around internet catch phrases again... one of these days you'll realize that most of us reading your posts can easily tell when you don't know what the hell you're talking about.
I simply asked a series of questions. I didn't even make any assumption or speak on your anticipated response, even though it was exactly what I expected it to be. As usual you're making lots of assumptions, generalizations and with conviction as if you are an authority. You don't own a gun but you know exactly what you'd do with it if you did. You'd easily be able to take a life... let alone aim it at a guy trying to take yours. Lets not forget, you just said you'd hang with all your friends who surely have claimed they do know what they'd do in these situations... hours at the shooting range and a little COD and Splinter Cell and you're in safe hands.
Again, I do not own any guns. I have never shot a gun. I never said I'd be one of the students that would be carrying a gun. So why do you keep on insisting that I don't have what it takes to do what's necessary?
I never said I would have a gun, yet you keep talking as if I said I would.
And now you're making assumptions that my friends are inexperienced and don't know what to do. So please, enlighten me on what your point is.
Are you saying you wouldn't trust me with your safety? If so, I never said you should....as I said I wouldn't have a gun. Or are you saying you wouldn't trust anyone not wearing a badge, with your safety?
Either way, what the **** does it have to do with my post?Comment

Re: Are College Campuses Really Safer Now?
It's nothing about selective reading, you act as if it's easy to just stand up and shoot someone, ignoring the fact that it would be a chaotic situation with a group of people carrying guns who more than likely had not had any experience going through something like that but somehow they'll magically be able to make things better.
It's not like these things happen in slow motion. What if you shoot the guy and them somebody else decides to shoot you because they're not sure who's the bad guy. Knowing how to fire a gun at a range and being capable of using it safely and effectively in a chaotic situation are two completely different things.
The idea that having more people carry guns would make us safer is one of the most insanely idiotic things I've ever heard.Comment

Re: Are College Campuses Really Safer Now?
I just dont think you can fix this by adding to the issue....
You dont pour gasonline on a fire to put it out. You add more guns on campus to untrained paniced kids you are asking for more innocent people to get killed and then there would have been. To solve problems you look for the issues that have caused these things to occur in the first place you dont bandaid solution a situation where people lives are in danger.Comment

Re: Are College Campuses Really Safer Now?
If you aren't willing to allow students to protect themselves, and if you aren't willing to make accomodations to allow more secure campuses (metal detectors, frisks, etc..) what do you suggest?
Either you submit to the idea that campuses will never be safe, and hope to god you are never in a situation where someone has a gun and starts shooting. Or you either allow metal detectors in every building to be installed, frisks before entering classrooms, etc... Or you allow students to carry weapons, but only if they have the proper training.
I personally don't want to be frisked, and I know we won't ever be able to carry on campus. So, I guess I'm just praying I'm never in a situation where someone starts shooting.Comment

If it were up to me i'd heartily invest in metal detectors. You know, some of this comes down to the students and those who give money to these institutions. If they really want to protect themselves they would pay a small extra price to do so.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Are College Campuses Really Safer Now?
I guess metal detectors are better than nothing, but plenty of schools have open concourses that you walk right into. Metal detectors will just keep the guns out of the buildings. Like I said, better than nothing, but you can't protect the whole school.
More responsibility needs to be taken on both the students reporting people they feel cause a treat as well as a department that screens students coming into a university.Last edited by aukevin; 03-03-2008, 05:13 PM.

Re: Are College Campuses Really Safer Now?
UMass hasn't seemed too safe lately...
-Three different "threats" have been issued within the past 7 days, though all have amounted to nothing.
-Two weeks ago or so, a student was attacked and proceeded to stab his two attackers in self-defense. All three are being brought up on charges (two for federal hate crime offenses and then the victim for assault with a deadly weapon).
-Superbowl weekend...well, it's UMass, the Patriots lost...it wasn't pretty. I think there were four reports of assaults that night alone.
Nothing as serious as a school shooting or a bomb (though, we've had two bomb threats already this year), but the University actually seems pretty safe to me, despite all of this. The staff we have here actually seems knowledgeable and seems to actually do more than sit around.Comment
